......could a Disney/Pixar merger be next??

Headline: DREAMWORKS ACQUIRES PACIFIC DATA IMAGES
Wire Service: OTC (COMTEX Newswire)
Date: Thu, Feb 10, 2000

Feb 10, 2000 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- (Full text of statement. Contact
details below).
LOS ANGELES, Feb 10/PRNewswire-AsiaNet/ - DreamWorks SKG has entered
into an agreement to acquire the majority interest of PDI (Pacific Data
Images), the Northern California-based animation and visual effects
production studio, it was announced today by DreamWorks principal Jeffrey
Katzenberg. The new company will be called PDI/DreamWorks.
The move came after PDI founder and Chairman Carl Rosendahl made the
decision to step down from his post to pursue outside creative interests.
He will, however, serve as a consultant to the new company.
In making the announcement, Katzenberg stated, "Carl Rosendahl built
PDI from the ground up into one of the leading computer animation and
visual effects houses in the industry."
"DreamWorks is committed to the successful future of PDI and is
excited
about the limitless possibilities this acquisition offers."
PDI will continue to operate as a stand-alone business unit of
DreamWorks, producing computer-animated feature films for DreamWorks, as
well as commercials and feature film effects.
In addition to its current Palo Alto location, there are plans to
develop a second production facility in Southern California, named
PDI/DreamWorks South, which will be managed and run by PDI.
DreamWorks' association with PDI initiated in 1996 when the studio
acquired 40 percent of PDI in an exclusive pact to produce a series of
animated feature films. The first film stemming from that agreement was
the computer animated comedy "Antz," which was released in October 1998
and went on to gross over $180 million worldwide.
PDI also produced visual effects for several of DreamWorks' live
action
features, including "The Peacemaker," "Forces of Nature" and the upcoming
"The Legend of Bagger Vance."
DreamWorks and PDI have two more features presently in production: the
comedy "Shrek," starring the voices of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie
Murphy; and "Tusker," which follows the perilous adventures of an
elephant
herd as they cross Southeast Asia.
DreamWorks SKG was formed in October 1994 by its three principal
partners - Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen - to
produce live-action motion pictures, animated feature films, network,
syndicated and cable television programming, home video entertainment,
records, books, toys, consumer products and interactive entertainment.

I wish. In an interview w/ the LA TImes I think it was, Roy kinda
alluded to the fact that he wants to retire. Buy up Pixar, and put
Lassester in charge of the animation operations at Disney.

Oh..and buy Apple too and let Jobs run the whole joint.

Putting Lassester in charge of animation would be a great idea.............

HA! I just made a very similar post before reading this.
The cards are all there folks. You will never find a guy better than Lassiter
to run animation. You will never find a guy more capable then Jobs to run a
company like Disney.

Good God Kevin! They need to buy Apple like they need to promote Pressler and
hire all of his relatives. Talk about a non-core business.

I'd buy a major stake in Pixar, but not the whole thing.

I agree that now is not the time to be buying Apple. But Pixar and Apple may
very well be a package deal, and with Apple comes Jobs, plus it brings some
VERY cool internet technology that is easily the best out there and they are
about to introduce some really revolutionary internet tools unlike anyone else
really has. I only wish they would have bought Apple a few years ago and
skipped the sports teams and cruise lines. But yea, although it would be great
to see it happen some day, that day is not now.

At the very least, Jobs would be able to make Infoseek- aka go.com- a
profitable concern. My stock is worth less than half what I paid for it!

So what you're saying here is that you want The Walt Disney Company to become a
pc and Internet company. You know that means draining -- and I mean draining
-- revenues from all other segments of the business to fund years of R&D for
these new revolutionary Internet tools.

If they buy Apple, I'm going to have to hop on the I-hate-Eisner bandwagon
because then I'll know that he's really lost it.

Well no, that's NOT what I am saying Lisa.
The one thing about Apple that is really against what Disney could use in the
manufacturing elements. Disney certainly does not want to own overseas PC
factories. So that segment would have to be sold off and Apple would have to
go to third parties for all manufacturing. Aside from that it is a perfect
fit.

Disney gets Pixar, and I think we all agree that would be good.
Disney gets Lasseter and I KNOW that would be good.
Disney expands it's internet presence which like it or not WILL be something
every major media company HAS to do.
Eisner then has a REAL hier in the wings in Jobs.

Listen, I say again, this is not the time for it nd it certainly is not in the
cards anytime soon. But it makes one hell of a lot more sense than most of the
recent ventures Disney has entered, and it would bring in some real value for a
change.
