Script/macros to create X-events?

I'm looking for an utility to create X-events to a running application.
I mean things like pressing the OK button of the first window. Opening
a particular menu etc.
Under dos there was an utility to record key-presses called playback.
That gave you macro functionality independent of the current application.
Does there exist something like that for Xwindows?
Why not? Is it difficult to make?
