Any ideas about getting US auto insurance for a British traveller?

Hi there, I am a British student (and citizen) and I am planning to head to
America in the summer to work on a summer camp, I then plan to travel the
length of the west coast then travel to Canada to work a ski season. I have
my heart set on buying a car but am unsure on how I would arrange insurance.
Does anyone know of any US companies that would insure me? Or know of any
sites with second-hand car buying information.
