A question about Disney/Pixar Cars

I have Disney/Pixar Cars designed for the Playstation 2, but playing on
Playstation 3. I have a game question that hopefully someone can shed some
light on.

At seemingly both the extreme left and right ends of the town of Radiator
Springs itself, there are big barriers of both large boulders and wooden
boards. Is there any way around these? I tried, but can't seem to sneak by,
and the car doesn't jump high enough to make a difference. Am I wasting my
time, or is there indeed way way to get past these barriers?
