I had a similar problem with my lucent win modem. All I did was upgrade the
firmware and the problem was history. Good luck finding your firmware.

Firmware is software that is embedded in some sort of ROM chip. Some
examples would be: your computer's bios, the programs running your hard
drives, cd-roms, and most pertinent, your modem. Game cartridges could
also be considered firmware.

It is called "firm" because it shares qualities of both hardware (ROM chips)
and
software (it is a program). Most of the time nowadays firmware is stored on
EEPROMS
or Flash RAM chips. This allows it to be changed electronically rather than
the old
method (which was physically removing the chips, and replacing them with new
ones).
