OKI USB Printer causes power cutoff to PC.
I'm running WinXp on 2.4 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 80GB HD, USB 2.0 ports, DVD-ROM/RAM
drive, et al. OKI USB printer, external 160GB HD (USB 2.0)
My PC shuts off (like a power blackout) every 4th or 5th time I hit the
print command from WinXP. THis happens whether the print command is from
Explorer, MSWord, etc. When it happens, the power-off occurs almost exactly
(to within a second) at the moment of hitting the enter key to execute
printing. Naturally I must reboot from power off and lose any documents that
were open... Not to mention corrupting Windows system files, etc.
The OKI printer is always on power standby, but when the PC shuts off some
of the print data gets through, and so usually the first page of the print
job actually gets printed. However, the OKI printer power actually comes on
(from standby) about a minute after the print command (and after the PC has
shut off).
Even though the printer doesn't come on immediately upon the print command,
my first thought was still that the OKI printer is somehow grabbing power
from the PC at the print command moment, causing a loss of power and
shutting off the PC. For this reason I purchased a UPS for the PC and moved
the printer power to a completely different outlet. Same problem. Also,
since I have 6 USB outlets in the PC, I have tried moving the external USB
HD and printer to different outlets, etc. No success. (Also checked to
make sure the mother board USB power connector is definitely connected.)
Incidentally I discovered that another PC (PC2) on my home LAN network also
causes the first PC to shut off if a print command is sent to the OKI
printer from PC2. Not nice. (The OKI USB is directly connected to the first
PC.)
This is just weird and I've never had such a problem in 15 years of PCing. I
have to wince and cross the fingers (and save everything I can) before
hitting the print command. As far as solution, I have tried to disable
everything I can having to with automatic power down/etc. (ACPI) in the
BIOS, but then again that is supposed to be software power down anyway, i.e.
much more graceful. The problem here is that the power just gets cut.
(I have called OKI and of course their printer is not the problem I am
told...)
Incidentally it seems I can print to a file, and then later send to file to
the printer (through a nifty little program called PrFile32.exe.) Using
this method, for some reason, I have not yet had a PC power out occur. But
any other print command from any application causes the power out about
every 5th time or so, maybe more often.
Finally, if the OKI printer power is already powered-up, I can print to my
heart's content without power cutoff. It is only when it's on standby that
print command causes the blackout. So definitely something to do with the
OKI power, but what? Because the PC has its own UPS and anyway the devices
are on separate power outlets.
Since I don't even know where to go with this -- I'd be very appreciative of
any directions or suggestions.

I assume that your friend is using the latest XPee printer drivers.
I also assume he or she has thoroughly searched the Knowledge Base at
www.okidata.com - assuming that your friend is NOT in Japan.
And/or this message was also posted to comp.periphs.printers ?

He is in Japan and called OKI.... to talk to somebody who barely knew that
Oki makes printers, too! You know how it is here. If you are lucky, you get
a competent person on the line...

I am pretty sure that he doesn't know this one.
Thanks for the input.

The Knowledge Base at www.okidata.com was pretty comprehensive - I can't
offer a more specific url without the printer model number.
With just a total of four Oki printers in the Kakaku top 116 selling
models - and none of the models under 90000 yen - getting 'first hand'
advice from us cheapskates is going to be like finding a hard disk of fully
registered software on a gaijin's computer.

Haha... I'll bet that most have registered versions of Kazaa, WinMX, iMesch
and the like!
