they're shelling out over $300,000 per "guard" to guard the soldiers
building their camp in Iraq or something. Another 100 oku yen that
won't be going towards humanitarian aid. I'm sure they'll soon be
another demand for payment to ensure no-one shoots at the GSDF too
much once they start patrolling.
I hate to think what sort of coverage we'll get the first time a live
bullet goes flying anywhere near the GSDF...
Also, I apologise for not cross-posting and filling up our bit of

Yeah, well...

Oh, I don't know.... it's such a novel idea, it might even catch on.

I like it!
I bet we can pitch this to hollywood. We need to work out a screen play
quick!
Tribal Leader: We need this money to protect your boys, see? Because if we
don't get this protection money, see, we can't guarantee their safety, see?
And in Iraq, you never know who's gonna get hurt! (he punctuates this by
knocking a vase to the floor, where it breaks).
Koizumi: How much do you want?

I'll correct :
Koizumi (with a *huge* smile) : Thank you so much ! I was *so* worried
of the bad consequences for me if any of the SDF member in Iraq would be
hurt ! How much do you want ?
How much would you pay for your life if you're country put you in
harms way just to support the worst fucking U.S. president?

That's what soldiers are for!
James
I liked the poster of Koizumi as Bush's dog. Classic.
It was my understanding that Jieitai members are free to quit any time
they want to.
(Clinton's still president?)

I'd pay a lot.
But we're talking about Koizumi here.
He could have said no to Bush, and that would have insured no japanese
force would be injured in Irak.
But he says yes, looks like lackey, gets a few japanese angry about
that, then realizes if any of the soldiers gets hurt, people will think
again and there will be a lot more angry people, so he pays big bucks to
avoid that, the ridiculous part of paying to get soldiers protected not
being his worry at all.
I think they sent the gung-ho guys who want to legitimize the Japanese
military. But, of course, no one wants to get killed for doing this.
> (Clinton's still president?)
No he left. He was too sexy for the post. Now we have a totally
sexless man in the post who only had a hard-up for Saddam. But now
that Saddam's been caught we should bring the boys home.
Not just a few. After the recent death of the two diplomats, most
people polled have been against sending the forces to Iraq.

Japanese are very practical. Being ridiculous is not a problem if it
achieves the objective. However, Koizumi must be worried about
spending so much. The Japanese budget deficit is worse that the
U.S.'s in terms of relative GDP. The govt spends about 40 trillion
yen more than it collects in taxes per year. However, sending the
troops to Iraq may just be part of a long range plan for the LDP to
build up the military and get the military-industrial complex running
again. It would kinda explains Koizumi's stupid insistence on
visiting that shrine every year.
Actually, the proportion in favor just recently passed the halfway mark,
while those against fell down to the 30s.
We'll see how opinions hold up after the first SDF boy comes home in a body
bag.
