I've noticed a lot of product refills are more expensive than the orignal
product.

At my local Daiei.

960ml Gum mouthwash with pump dispenser 1160yen

500ml Gum mouthwash refill 760yen.

Maybe you are paying for the privilege of reducing pollution, or subsidizing the
company's effort to do so.

I have noticed this too. Crazy, isn't it?

No, in fact the two 500 ml containers would use more plastic than the single
960ml. It doesn't make any sense.

Whether it makes sense or not depends on what angle you view it from.

Viewed from the consumer's perspective it makes no sense at all, of
course. But when viewed from the perspective of the marketing folks
who are (successfully) hoodwinking an unsuspecting public, it makes
sense all the way to the bank.

I remember going to the store to buy a replacement blade for an
electric razor. It was going to cost about 1100 yen. I only paid about
1500 for the whole damned razor. I mentioned to the clerk that it made
more sense to buy a new razor than to replace the blade. He agreed.

My local Daiei has own-brand washing-liquid refills, 250ml, 79 yen.
Same own-brand, 500ml, same 79 yen. I'm confused.

Yes, but please be stupid, buy refills for the sake of environment. The
international community will say you a big "Thank you."

Each time I break a glass tube in my coffee-maker, I buy a new machine, that
saves me 1500 yen (compared to buying a spare part). Any idea how I could
recycle half machines ?

On a semi-related note, there was a recent lawsuit against HP here in
the States. In their $100.00 printer with $50.00 cartridges containing
40 cents worth of ink, they were only half-filling the cartridge. That
way, you had to buy your first set of replacement cartridges that much
earlier. Believe it or not, HP won. The jury found that it wasn't a
deceptive trade practice.

I suspect this is also the case with automobiles. The first thing my mother
asked me when she visited me here in 1999 was, why are all the cars on the roads
less than 5 years old? I answered with the theory that since inspection fees and
taxes run into the thousands of US dollars even if your car's in impeccable
condition, there comes a point where it's simply more cost-effective to just go
out and buy a new car.

I also gave this answer for her question as to why there are SO MANY GOD DAMNED
JUNKYARD EYESORE FUCKLECLUSTERS ALL OVER THE PLACE.

(I'm only going off on this tangent because I finally pay my car off in January,
and immediately have to cough up 110,000 yen for a 車検, which amounts to
permission to drive my own car on the road for 2 more years. Then, of course,
I'm going to buy a new one.)

If my memory serves, there was a vending machine near my office in Roppongi
that had two different sizes of Pocari Sweat: The tall skinny size and the
normal American size. They did contain differing amounts of Pocari Sweat (ie,
they're not just different shapes, but different volumes as well). Both were
110 yen. I never could quite figure that out.

I guess it's just honesty -- the actual contents of the can account for just
a tiny fraction of the cost of getting that can into your grubby little paw.
Your 110 yen goes mostly to marketing, distribution/middlemen, electricity
for the vending machine, etc. So your choice is based entirely on how
thirsty you are.
