How much for a round of golf in Japan? Prefer to find out info for the
Kansai region, but it's more for future info so anyplace is okay. I've
heard stories of cheaper greens fees on weekdays, but have never
played in Japan.
Much obliged.

I don't play golf, but I can tell you about the 'Koganei Golf Club' (in
Tokyo). You won't play there, even if you bring a suitcase full of money!
All you need is an invitation by a member of this club... High ranked
Japanese politicians, bosses of Sony and Co., probably yakusa top brass and
such. During the bubble era it was the most expensive golf club in the
world.
Sorry for disappointing you...:-)

Most people I know play in Chiba or Yamanashi (near Kawaguchi-ko).
Don't know the green fees but I know that it isn't cheap. You can see
ads on the train sometimes for cheap green fees off lines like Odakyu or
such.
A better question is, who are you going to play with, are you going for
fun with a friend or is this some sort of business event, etc.?
Best of luck,

My wife and I are trying to scratch some money together for a trip
sometime this autumn; since I have no hope of ever finding work, as
soon as the rates drop (should in the next few weeks) we're going to
get some tickets. I'll probably have to find someone to go with,
unless my wife stops hating me enough to go with me. Unfortunately my
father in law and none of her relatives play.

I wouldn't put golf on my list of things to do on a trip to Japan unless
it was for a quasi-business meeting. There are plenty of courses
outside of Japan which are much better, more famous, etc.
Of course, having said that, and doing a quick search on Google, I came
up with the following:
http://www.ausgolf.com.au/2002world100.htm
41. Hirono (Kobe, Japan)
58. Kawana (Fuji) (Kawana, Japan)
60. Naruo (Osaka, Japan)
86. Kasumigaseki (East) (Tokyo, Japan)

Thanks!

For me, the expense is not so much the greens fees but all the other
stuff -- accomodations, clubs, meals, balls, and the prerequisite shoes.
For prices you might check out -
Nobeyama in Yamanashi:
www.chateraiseresort.co.jp/GOLF/index.html
or, up in Hokkaido:
http://www.chateraise.co.jp/cc/golf.html#01
(ie. a weekday round costs 5,000 - 7,000 yen)
I've been to Nobeyama - reasonable and nice, family type of place. The
nearby train station in Yatsugatake is supposedly the highest JR station in
Japan. Closer to Tokyo, you might also check out a club called Tsuru in
Otsuki -- busier and perhaps a little more exclusive. To get that similar
feeling for a much lower price, you can also head on over to your local
driving range. ;-)

A number of public courses in Mie offered a big discount on Monday
mornings. I believe we paid a bit under 10,000 where the regular rate
was at least double that, plus the madatory meal/drinks after the
match that they didn't apply during the discount period. You might
want to check if any of the public clubs in your neck of the woods do
the same.
As for me, I continue to enjoy the public course 10 mins from my
parents place during my visit... $18.00 a round (and that's in Canajun
funny money, too.) My golf game has never been better; might even
break a hundred one of these days.

Been playing best ball lately. My game has improved more by doing this
than anything else.

There's one place in Shinshiro where you can do a round for 8500.
Another in Gifu (but only 9 holes I'm told) for around 6000. Both
courses are not exactly scenic.

Ya s'pose to play 18 holes Jason.

"As I write, highly civilized human beings are flying overhead, trying
to kill me. They do not feel any enmity against me as an individual, nor
I against them. They are "only doing their duty", as the saying goes.
Most of them, I have no doubt, are kind-hearted law-abiding men who
would never dream of committing murder in private life. On the other
hand, if one of them succeeds in blowing me to pieces with a well-placed
bomb, he will never sleep any the worse for it. He is serving his
country, which has the power to absolve him from evil" - George Orwell,

I do....almost every day the past two weeks, followed by a nice
microbrew at a nearby pub. Funny, I don't miss Japan at all right now.
