First, this game is at least as addictive as EverCrack.

Your character gets to be one of 8 major Star Wars races. While some races
have slight attribute differences, they aren't particularly significant and
don't bar the character from any profession, unlike in other games such as
EverQuest where certain races had only certain classes open to them. The
appearance of characters is also highly customizable. Unlike like most other
MMORPGs, where everyone is buff, you can be a beanpole or a fatass or
anything in between. There are six beginning classes but you aren't locked
into any of them; you can train in skills from any class you like, so you
can be a specialist or a generalist.

Five planets to start from, and then several more you can travel to from
them. Graphics and game engine are top notch. Very resource intensive. 512
MB of RAM and a 64 MB video card that supports T&L are a must. I was
particularly impressed by how bodies of water looked.

The player-based economy is very cool. There are eBay-type auctions, people
hawking their gods in the street, and PC-run shops, resulting in prices that
rise and fall with the market.

That's about all I can think of for now. I think it's a really fun game but
it really sucks the time away.

I've heard it's really boring.

Thanks for the information.

Reactions to it seem to be very much divided, as is to be expected. The
idea of a totally player-based economy is interesting, but I wonder
whether it will develop the way the programmer expected.

Seems that some people are already getting into the spirit of things:

It's still difficult getting copies in Japan, so I may wait until I'm in
the US in a couple of weeks and pick up a copy. Some Japanese couldn't
wait, and there is a Japanese community forming already:

I wonder how long it will be until we see auctions like these:
http://tinyurl.com/fucm

That auction's a kiss on the cheek. I've seen Everquest characters and items
sell for over $1000 on eBay.

I've not encountered any Japanese players yet AFAICT, but I've registered at
that site and I'll see what sort of stuff they are up to.

I also recommend picking up this book. It's pretty useful:

Has anyone found a store that is selling the game?

I have a ton of friends who are playing it but our local Laox doesn't
have it - and I couldn't find anyone with enough english language
skills to try to find out if they're expecting it in...

Guess having someone buy it and ship it is always an option... But
I'd rather just buy it myself...

I pre-ordered it from Gamestop, and it arrived three days after the
official release.

Join me on Corbantis - the unofficial Japanese server.

Not to the scale of Ultima Online and other games, yet, but give it time.

Want to lay bets on how much the first Jedi character sold will go for?

Very little, at the moment, from the looks of things. Someone started a
thread for people to introduce their characters, and there are only 43
posts so far: http://tinyurl.com/fxnb

It still seem very difficult to get a copy of the game in Japan. I only
know of one store ('Overtop' in Akihabara) that has copies, and they
have sold out and are waiting for their second shipment.

Purchasing online seems to be the quickest option at the moment.

I'll keep it in mind. Thanks.

What's it like playing from Japan with regards to latency? Any network
problems?

Oh geez, those guys are loons. $10 for 5000 credits? I made almost 7k in a
few hours of beating up animals last night.

Oh man. And the thing is, being a Jedi will suck in many ways. Everyone will
be trying to kill you. Te big thing on all the forums boards is trying to
figure out how to open the Force Sensitive character slot. I have a Scout
going pretty nicely now, which I started with the intention of being a
bounty hunter, but these days I have been leaning towards Creature Handler.

That may be the way to go. This is the advantage of living in a podunk town,
I suppose. I simply called a shop the day before release and asked if I
could reserve a copy. No problem.

I may just do that. What's your character name and what planet/town are you
in?

Not much lag. I ping 150-180 on a cable modem.

There is more of a graphics lag than a network lag, so your PC spec
makes a big difference.

The graphics engine was designed to have a long life and most machines
can't handle everything on full.

I have a P4 2.8 GHZ and a Radeon 9700 pro 128mb graphics card, but
it's still choppy in the towns on half settings. 512mb memory also
makes a difference.

Saying that, the visuals are still great, even on the lowest settings.

I'm in Mos Eisley on Tatooine.

My character name is Marrisi Uilleann.

Send me an email in the game.

Will do. I'll be online whenever my new RAM gets here (bought an extra 512
MB), which should be in about an hour according to package tracking.

Ugh - just checked with a bunch of my AC buddies and my laptop won't
handle the req's. Guess I'm out of luck till I can find a wireless
router and get my gaming machine unpacked and online at home.

Yeah - I remember selling a few characters for AC for over 1000 bucks
2 years ago. I'd be lucky if I could sell them for 100 now. The
first jedi could break the AC record of over 10000 though... This
game has the mass appeal to draw that kind of cash.

I guess it was the video requirements that got you? I was a bit surly about
not being able to run it on my laptop, but once I played I didn't think
twice about buying the new video card for the desktop.

I like the Netgeat MR814. I get much better range out of it than I ever did
with a Linksys.

I'm wondering when the first Jedi will appear, and how anyone would ever
know. Jedi will supposedly have everyone hot on their tail.

I played with Mukade for a few hours last night and we beat up a lot of
stuff around Mos Eisley. We just figured out how to do screenshots within
the game so we may post links to some pics this weekend.
