The other day I placed an order for a couple of games (Sub Command and
IL-2 Sturmovik) through www.chipsbits.com, via a link from
www.subsim.com. The subsim site gets a cut from the sale, and since
they have been a useful site for me I don't mind supporting them in
that way. I ordered some other games in the same way a little over a
year ago, with no problems.

This time, though, The day after placing my order I received an e-mail
telling me that in order for them to process my order I have to send
them photocopies of the front and back of my credit card, together
with a letter stating that I authorize this and all future purchases
from them.

The only other time I have encountered this is when I attempted to get
a refund from the piece of shit web hosting service I use(d). The only
wanted the standard info (card name, number, expiration, billing
address) when they took my money....yet they wanted copies of the
front and back of the card and copies of the front and back of my
driver's license in order to *refund* my money. I learned that the
operator of that business is now doing time in a federal penitentiary
for credit card fraud facilitated by acquiring such things. Naturally,
this made me leery as hell and I cancelled the order for the games and
informed them I would be contacting the FBI and the attorney-general
in the state where the business is located.

What I need now is a recommendation for a reputable site. Does anyone
have one?

Nevermind.

Found it on Amazon. They refuse to ship the game outside the US, but
I'll just have my parents forward it to me.

Still might good to see some references, though.

Outpost.com has always been cool for me.
http://www.outpost.com/

I have been ordering from them for years, and never had a problem. They were
still shipping overseas last time I ordered from them. Since the product
descriptions are weak at best, I often use Amazon to check out products,
then order from outpost.

They have sub command:
http://shop1.outpost.com/product/3489243
$9.99

Love that "detailed description". You have a gift for understatement.

Thanks a lot for the info. I was able to order through them and order
the books through Amazon Japan. Now everything will come straight to
my door and I don't have to worry about my poor feeble old mother
slipping on the icy steps at the post office and breaking her hip. Old
folks don't live long after stuff like that, you know.

One nice thing about Outpost is that they clearly state when they are
unable to ship a particular product overseas. If it does not
specifically mention on the product description page that they cannot
take non-US orders for that item, you're good to go.

I have also been very pleased with Outpost over the past several years.

You're lucky I don't believe in mail in rebates, otherwise I'd be pissed as hell
that I just spent $200 for an OEM version of this:

At least mine came with a free paper weight...

Me too. They're a scam.

Ooh! Thanks for the tip. In this case I might make an exception to my
anti-mail-in-rebate policy. I've been thinking of making a DIY these days.
Have you see the Shuttle XPCs? I'm rather drawn to them.

Yup. Always a good idea to read the fine print before making a purchase
like this.

I agree with cyberian outpost. One big problem with having your relatives
ship you stuff is that they have to deal with US postal service lines. Maybe
you've forgotten what it's like, but going to a sepponian post office is an
awful lot like going to disneyland or the DMV. You wait in a long line to
get a number so you can wait in line to talk with the information desk
dudette where you will find where you can wait in line in order to get a
number for the line that actually deals with mail, but which actually in is
in charge of issuing the required paperwork to make an appointment.

I've never seen registered mail just dissapear like that.

Yeah, I've seen them in person.

The only problem with non-standard cases, is that you severely limit your
upgradability.

As long as you aren't planing on running games on it, it should last you
for at least 5 years.

I built my computers from scratch (grew the silicon wafers myself) so if you
need any tips/help/advice, send me an e-mail and I'll be glad to help.

Let me share with you one of my Secrets To A Happy Life. I classify
situations like that as "S.E.P." (Somebody Else's Problem). Knowing
how to recognize S.E.P. can take a real load off your mind.

I can tell you've never been to the post office in a rural town in
Tennessee. Line? What line?

I bet they managed to find the check (made out to them) when the
mailman brought it.
