How to perform a character count in Excel?
I receive sometimes jobs where I have to translate sentences in cells while
overwriting the source text.
The Excel file also includes a number of "text boxes".
When I copy the Excel file into MS Word, normal text is copied, but the text
within the text boxes is not.

Is there a way to get a total character count directly in Excel, or is there
a trick to copy everything into MS Word for a proper count?
If this doesn't work, is there some software that will make proper counting
possible?

I usually copy and paste to word. If you are billing based on word
count -rather than character count, there is a free utility called
translators abacus (also counts html and some other text). But abacus only
gives word count.

Speaking of character count, here is a little set of Word macros that count
multiple files in a folder and generate a total character count report -very
handy for billing purposes.

I also have a small macro that counts all the words in an MS-Word file, including words in text boxes. Double-byte characters are
also counted.

Excellent. Any tips as to how I can modify these functions/methods so
characters are counted instead of words?

Try it again, I just modified it to count the characters. Now it counts characters, words, and double-byte characters. The
non-Japanese character/word count ends up being the character/word count minus double-byte characters.

I love it. Even more than Aichi Security Services.

Technically, we have two employees, but this is really a one-man show. You could call me the head GIT.

Thank you very much. That is very nice of you, really.

But I must have done something wrong at installation. After installing the
first version (the one counts words) I had a WordCount macro among the macro
choices displayed upon alt-f8. But, after installing the revised version,
it's gone. Instead, there are 6 macros (more like functions), respectively
WordCount.BodyWordCount, WordCount.ReportWordCount, WordCount.WordCountAll,
WordCount1.BodyWordCount, WordCount1.ReportWordCount. and
WordCount1.WordCountAll.

I think its because I installed it over without uninstalling the first copy.
Anyway the problem is it does not seem right. For instance for following
particular document, your wordcount reports:

10.676 characters in body (which is accurate),
53.380 characters in text boxes (which is way too many), and
10.580 double-byte chars (there shouldn't be any, since the text is in
english).

What am I doing wrong? How do I uninstall and make a clean installation
again?

I get 10,547 characters, 2,097 words, no words in text boxes.

Why don't you mail me offline at ryang at gol dot com, I'll see if I can get this sorted out.
