Well, I had heard that the Media Lab's financial controls and research
grants were going down the toilet, but I thought it was said only
in a figuratively sense...

What was the deal with their big fallout with "Media Lab Asia" or
whatever they were calling their India extension campus? Since when did
research institutions need brand names?

I suppose it ain't a bad thing. Maybe soon 18-year old high school
chess champions will be signing $100 million endorsement contracts for
MIT. Just imagine about any Nike ad with the *Just Do It* replaced with
whispered *Checkmate* and you get the idea.

Looks like another asian bigwig got seduced by the MIT aura and Nicholas
Negroponte's spiel. I understand a now disgraced indian IT minister had
promised about US$500M over 10 years to fund Media Lab Asia in Mumbai,
which should already have raised eyebrows. MIT Media Lab's annual
operating budget in expensive New England was only about US$40M...
I suppose lots of Indian Institutes of Technology were quite pissed off
that so much Indian government money was earmarked for blue sky projects
heavily influenced by Cambridge, and felt they weren't getting much of
substance in this kind of deal...

Anyway, in these post-IT bubble times, it seems we see in the media much
more of John, US ambasssador to the UN, who also happens to be Nicholas'
elder brother. It's such a small world...
