NOTE: HOW TO ACCESS WEB ADDRESSES GIVEN IN THIS BULLETIN

When a long Web address spills over to a second line:

** Be sure ** to use the ENTIRE Web address. If an address
gets split up or truncated, you will not reach the site.
Copy and Paste the entire address into your Web browser,
removing any blank spaces that appear. It would be BEST to
first RECONSTRUCT the Web address using NOTEPAD or
a word process -- by copying and pasting the parts into
a blank screen and deleting spaces and line breaks. This is
especially important when a Web address is so long
that it spills over onto a second line.

International Volunteer Projects/Workcamps in AFRICA

The SEPIA Voluntary Workcamps Association in Togo (SEPIA, in
French-speaking Togo) -- in addition to VOLU-Ghana -- is accepting
applications for its interntional volunteer projects.

The languages spoken in the Projects are French and English.
For anyone desiring to learn French, or improve their French,
participation in SEPIA-Togo provides an EXCELLENT opportunity.

Projects focus on: AIDS/HIV education & prevention; public health;
remedial/special education; tutoring; working with youth; sports
and recreation; construction (building schools, clinics, libraries).

Applying is easy. Once you submit your application,
you can count on being accepted, and you can begin at
once to make your air travel arrangements. Send no
money with your application. The modest camp fees (approx
$200, covering room and board during the several-week
project) are not paid until after you arrive in the country.

At the above SEPIA and VOLU sites, find and print out the
application or "fiche d'inscription".

Voluntary workcamp organizations, which host international
volunteers, exist in virtually EVERY African country.
Find copious listings of these organizations in the Resource

Participating in a volunteer program would probably
be the CHEAPEST -- and perhaps BEST -- way to
experience the African Diaspora IN-DEPTH. Volunteers typically
arrange their own air transportation. Room and board
will likely be provided by the host organization either free
or at a significant discount.

Beyond SCI, Quakers/Friends, VFP, and AVSO, there are MANY
other "intermediary" organizations that will place you in a
volunteer project or workcamp in Africa.

More about this below.

ADVICE: leave no stone unturned.

Write to some programs, obtain information.
START THE DIALOGUE (...we cannot say this enough).

Many great opportunities are awaiting you.

BON VOYAGE !!

Best wishes,

Be sure to talk with faculty and staff at your school about any
existing programs that are available to you. Inquire, first,
at the highest levels (president, dean, department chair,
faculty advisor, international studies & study abroad directors,
etc.).

You are also able to write/apply directly to universities in Africa
to gain admission and to work out a study program for yourself.

Obtain addresses from a Reference Librarian, the Web,
or visit:

For helpful ideas/contacts, do not hesitate to speak with faculty
(and students) at your school whose homeland is Africa. They often
can be a treasure trove of great resources that you could find
nowhere else, and will be delighted at your interest.

There are MANY intermediary organizations similar to SCI (such as
Friends/Quakers, Volunteers for Peace, etc.) through
which one may apply to a project in Africa, thus benefiting
in some cases from any special discount arrangements that the
intermediary organization has worked out with the host organization
in Africa (such as for room and board). Alternatively, often you
may bypass intermediary organizations and apply DIRECTLY to host
organizations in Africa by writing to them (by regular mail in
addition to E-mail) and requesting the application, schedule of
projects and all details.
