card reader trouble

My old PDC640 is apparently not compatible with XP even though have
downloaded XP driver. Photomax CD still says not compatible with XP.
However, I have been able to use a card reader and the Smart Media card from
the camera to put pictures on an XP computer. Now at a different XP
computer, I can't make it work. What should I look for?
