My Migration (actually switch) to Digital. I am seriously looking at the
Nikon 5700. That's my MAX budget, well a little more.. but for these few
extra bucks it seems the benefit is great.

My Question/Opinion request: What other cameras in the price range should I
consider and compare to the Nikon 5700?

Other input: Battery life, Storage... what are the BIG things I need to
'focus' on when switching from 35mm to Digital.

( Computer 2.4 gig, 1gig DDR Ram, 200 gig storage, CDR/W .. etc etc, I
assume this is mor then enuff!)

Slam it to me boys.. I can take it.. !! (gals to! <wink>)

Hi Dan,

I have got the Nikon 5700, and i have found it to be a superb piece of kit.
I tested many others within a similar price-range - (the Minolta Dimage,
Sony Digi Cams, etc..) but nothing matched the Nikon 5700.

Picture quality is excellent for the price, but i would suggest that you
purchase high-capacity flash cards.

If i think of any other points, i will let you know.

Many thanks,

Rob.

Rob,

I am making a transition from point and shoot digital to SLR digital camera.
After reading one review, I began to focus on Olympus E-10 for an important
reason that it has fixed lens and thereby obviates any dust getting inside
while you change lenses.

Did you consider fixed lens cameras before you bought Nikon 5700?

What did you do to get the best price for the camera you bought?

I tried the 5700 but found that the auto focus really seemed to struggle.
Ended up going for the Olympus C750 and have to say well impressed so far.

Pardon my ignorance, because I have yet only read reviews and specs on the
Nikon 5700, but isn't it a fixed lens camera?

If not, I need to do additional research!

Yes.

I found that autofocus does at times "hunt and seek" as when I took a
picture thru the windshield. The autofocus tried to focus on a bug-splat
rather than the sign in the distance. I simply switched to user-mode 1 and
used manual focus. Pix on the 5700 are great and I don't miss my old Canon
AE-1.

Wow .. Even if I do decide on the 5700 (which has a slight margin over the
others at this point) I didn't even imagine giving up my A-1 or AE-1 for
good!! Especially my 500mm lens (1000 with 2x) I am thinking of the 5700
(or similar) to use a replacement only for some photography not all. I
hadn't even thought of totally abandoning my SLR's!! Now you have made me
cry! haha just kidding... seriously ... you don't use any film since you
purchased a Digital??

As for the Auto Focus problem through the windshield .. I have found this to
be the case even with my wife's Nikon N55 SLR. (either lens). I assume this
problem will only be overcome by the BIG $$$ cameras that focus where your
eye looks. Thats only my obersevation being a old Manual Focus guy, that
never really likes using his wifes N55 because of that exact problem ..
I wanna focus where I wanna focus!

Thanks for the input Ray ... very helpful!!

Digitally overwhelmed,
Dan R.

Wait another month and see what's out. Minolta and Sony came out with
cameras in that same price range. They really sound impressive. Nikon's been
quiet lately, I can't wait to see what they replace the 5700 and D100 with.
The 5700 has been out for over a year. The way digital cameras are improving
I think that may be a little old. The 5700 does have some flaws and I'm
hoping Nikon will address them.

Hi, Dan.

After a lot of research, I bought a 5700 in late July. I've
been quite happy with it for outdoor shooting.

But, in at least my case, I'm having real problems with the
built-in Speedlight and a Vivitar external flash. Not sure
what the problem is, I'm still working through Nikon's Tech
Support.

As to the 5700, I did not want an 8 mega pixel camera, just
don't need it. I did want a sharp, noise-free camera and the
5700 performs reasonably well for me (of course, everything
can be better!).

I bought two no-name batteries and 3 no-name 256MB CF cards
for it. The battery life is reasonable unless I'm using the
Speedlight. That chews up a battery pretty fast.

I shoot 100% in 1600 x 1200 with "fine" JPEG, which results
in file sizes around 750-900KB. I do that because "normal"
has too many JPEG artifacts for my taste - my hobby is car
picture collecting and I don't want any artifacts if I can
possibly help it.

Anyway, in non-flash mode, I get around 150-200 pictures on
a battery charge. I'm not sure if that is typical or not,
but friends who have competing digitals say that I'm
probably OK.

I think the 5700 is more like 18+ months old. I bought mine
retail for $700 in late July with a $150 rebate from Nikon.
Nikon has already replaced the 5700 with an 8 mega pixel job
that is around $900-1000 retail. It's more than I need.

5700's are getting scarce with Nikon trying to clear dealer
inventory with a juicy rebate.

One comment I'd make, though. I've always been impressed
with Nikon (except for a serious flash problem I'm having)
but I think that maybe $200 of the $700 is because it says
"Nikon" on it.
