I am using a viking 128 CF card in my Nikon 4500. I notice it takes a while
between pictures (like 3 seconds). Could this be because the card has not
been formatted specifically for the Nikon? In other words, it works, but
poorly. Of course I will format it in the camera (as soon as my battery
finishes charging), but I am curious if this is why it has been taking so
long to record pics.

No. Umm, I'm not /exactly/ sure but testing and basic deductive reasoning
tells me that the slowness you mention is due to whatever presave processing
you have the camera doing. Jpegging, Increased sharpness, Red-eye removal,
etc. etc. and then finally the actual time is takes to writes the image.

With all of the presave processing options turned off it writes really
really fast. Maybe 3 or 4 Full sized uncompressed images per second.

Storage time is also determined by the size of picture you select. I have
the 5700 and if I use Fine (200+ pictures on a 512mb card) the storage time
is fast. Hi mode (35 pictures on the 512mb card) stores in TIFF and takes
5-10 seconds to store the completed picture.
