Hi Martin and Hanna
What a great idea. Wish I could join in. It would be nice to ride
with a group of like minded people.
Hanna, I'm not so sure I will be able to explain the attraction of
riding fixed wheel any better than Martin. If you look on the web,
you'll see a whole host of reasons why some people choose to ride a
fixed wheel bike; from the cod-spiritual (it's Zen innit!) to the
pseudo-scientific (it improves your pedal stroke). I'm not sure I buy
in to either of those reasons really. For me, I just really like the
feeling of riding a really lightweight bike fast. It is true that at
least some of the time during a ride, you will not be in the optimum
gear for the situation but usually you are able to move along pretty
well anyway because of the lighter weight of the bike and the momentum
of the pedals. It's kind of hard to put into words really so I guess
the best I can say is "just give it a go". Choose a sensible gear and
I'm sure that in Canterbury, you'll find it reasonably forgiving on
your knees.
Oh, and the other thing.....they look so much better than a geared
bike (with apologies to your, no doubt, very fine steed).
