So, I got this old mixte a few months ago for $5 on www.trademe.co.nz
and pulled it to pieces to get what parts I found useful. The front
wheel I threw in the rafters thinking it was junk because It was
chromed steel (easily buckled). Last month pulled it down and took to
the surface rust with a wire brush and it came up looking all shiny
and new. I then notice the marking ARAYA near the valve hole and
realized instantly I had to build a fixie using only steel parts, no
aluminium or any composites except rubber and bar tape. The rim I have
is very straight and it has a high flanged hub which is very
smooooooth after a few adjustments. I also have cut some steel ALPS
ROAD KING bars into bull horns and de-painted my chrome tipped forks.
I will use cottered cranks on a 10 speed frame with my ARAYA rim but
need a screw on free hub rear. I went to cycleways (where I may be
working) here in Christchurch to purchase one and the mechanic said he
keeps old steel rims for their cheaper bikes because straight ones are
scarce to find. He had like 15-20 of them. Darn it, I like the look of
one that had a similar high flanged hub to my front one. Oh well. A
steel head stem will also be used, hopefully one of those old chrome
things like on the Raleigh Arena
Frame wise I need something small. I'm only 5ft something and find
large frames scary when there is limited brakes and no coasting.
Weight wise I don't care, as long as it's steel.

How about a Turners police auction? Just thinking about it the frames
are usually the best parts on those bikes and it sounds like you have
pretty much everything else. Or are you going to use the mixte frame?
