Subject: Eastern Michigan University

Dear Coach,

Eastern Michigan University’s Division I Women’s Rowing team is currently recruiting 6 more (16 total) walk-on athletes for partial scholarships for the fall of 2016.We are looking for tall, driven, and dedicated athletes who may not be able to continue in their current sport at the Division I level, but still have a competitive fire.  They need no previous rowing experience to join our team, just a
desire to compete.
The reason I am contacting you is that we find that water polo players and swimmers make great collegiate rowers, as they already have the endurance we are looking for in a Division I athlete. If you know of any athletes that are not playing water polo in college, but might be exceptional athletes, then please pass on our info.

Rowing is the only collegiate sport where a walk-on athlete can not only make a varsity squad in their first year, but can go on to the NCAA Championships, the Under 23 World Championships, and the Olympics.  I have coached 6 walk-on athletes in the past 3 years to the Under 23 World Championships.  One is now training with the U.S. Olympic team.  65% of elite rowing athletes were walk-ons in college.  Height is the only thing we can’t coach, and it’s what makes a boat go fast.  We are looking for athletes with a minimum 3.0 GPA, 20 ACT, 5’9” and above, and 140-180 lbs.If a walk-on athlete is successful in their first year we will increase their scholarship.  In addition to our athletic scholarship, EMU gives academic scholarship for anyone with a 3.0 GPA/20 ACT and higher, anywhere from $4000-$6500.  With a tuition cost of around $18,000 per year, one of our walk-on athletes can have anywhere from 40%-70% of their college expenses paid just to try a new sport.

We would greatly appreciate it if you posted this letter, or shared it with your teams, so that prospective female student-athletes can be made aware of Eastern Michigan’s scholarship opportunities.  Please do not hesitate to pass along our information to any other athletes who you feel might be a good fit for our sport. I have attached a copy of this letter if that is easier for you to print out or pass along.

Interested athletes can fill out our online questionnaire at:  http://college.jumpforward.com/questionnaire.aspx?iid=1583&sportid=34

Go Eagles!

Sincerely,

Coach Mike Bailey
