I cloned the repo, compiled the code and loaded my favorite elephant model. After choosing the grid resolution and thickness, I ran the optimization step and got a good looking assembly plan of each layer.
Then, I realized that I should transform the input so that the four 4 feet are parallel to the ground. After having applied the transformation using the CGAL Polyhedron demo, I started over with the transformed model but I noticed that some additional bricks have been added outside of the model.
There were several options for the geometric test but since I wanted to write the output on the fly, I used the class Side_of_triangle_mesh class that relies on the AABB-tree package. My voxelization implementation is naive as it does n queries but it runs very fast for my model (and anyway the bottleneck here is the optimization algorithm).
I want to use the original yellow color for the bricks but some of them where not available at the time I ordered (at least I could not find them) and I have to pick another yellow and a gold color. After hours of assembly (3 evenings), I was proud of the work done as the output model looks great.
The source code of my binvox clone is available on github. Warning: I did not write any error handling and it assumes that the input model is a valid triangle mesh without self-intersection nor degenerate elements.
The elephant statues of Erwin have been a fun, creative, colorful way to brighten up the town and bring visitors to see and be photographed with them. Cheers to Erwin for being the first to use this idea a few years back in Upper East Tennessee.
Some say the elephants in Erwin, based on the sad story of Mary the circus elephant, may not be what Erwin wants to be associated with, but it is also history, and the story has been told far and wide. Contributing some of the funds collected to the Hohenwald Elephant Sanctuary as well as local charities does help balance the scales.
