Dear list members,

I already posted the part at the end of this message to the JHOVE2
list, so I think the most of you may already know. But please find a
short update here:

I finished the basic implementation and integration of JHOVE2 into the
FITS by now (implementation of the Jhove2 class, and configuration),
and will be starting to work on the XSL transformations right away.
Has any of you already startet working on this?

All the best.

PS. btw: hi frank! :-)

Hi there,

we are planning to include the FITS (http://code.google.com/p/fits/)
into our
koLibRI library (kopal Library of Retrieval and Ingest -
http://kopal.langzeitarchivierung.de/index_koLibRI.php.en) where we
already
are using the JHOVE.

To include JHOVE2 we thought of including the FITS first, and then
include
JHOVE2 into the FITS, or maybe vice versa :-)

Has anyone or is anyone already working on that matter? It would be
wonderful
to get some information, exchange experiences or maybe even get
already
implemented mappings from JHOVE2 output to the FITS output. Or maybe
we could
be of assistance anyhow?

We will start including JHOVE2 into the FITS soon, and would very much
appreciate comments to the matter.

Thanks a lot and all the best.

There have been requests for Jhove2 support in FITS but I am not aware
of anybody else working on it. Since the FITS source is not stored on
Google Code I'll be interesting in seeing the implementation and adding
it to the official branch.

Thanks,

Dear Mr McEwen, dear FITS and JHOVE2 list members,

I just finished an early version of the JHOVE2 integration in the FITS. Please
find a complete FITS container completed with JHOVE2 Java, XML, and XSLT files
and a short README file included here:

http://dp4lib.langzeitarchivierung.de/downloads/fits-0.5.0_J2.zip

This is working correctly with ZIP containers (only) at the moment, and
provides some information of the container itself and it's child sources.

I append the short README file where DONEs and TODOs are described.

Comments and questions are gladly welcomne.
Have a nice weekend!

Dear Stefan,

This sounds very promising. We deposit Zip files in our repository so I'm interested to see this. There is a related project at the National Library of France to create a technical metadata schema for container files (Zip, Gzip, Arc, Warc) called ContainerMD. It's still in draft form but maybe when its ready we can add support for it to FITS. Spencer is out of the office until May 16 but he can look at this sometime after he's back.

thanks,
Andrea

Hell,
Has there been any further developments with trying to get JHove2 into FITS?  We are currently looking at Archivematica 1.0 which has FITS built in but unfortunately the version of JHove used within this is quite dated.

Dear Vicky,

unfortunately I did no further programming of the JHOVE2 integration
into the FITS. Hopefully you could make use of my early version...?

All the best

Hi Vicky,

Besides what Stefan has said about his work, I don't think there has been any additional efforts to integrate JHOVE2 yet. I don't have experience with JHOVE2 but it looks like it could add support for some formats that aren't currently handled well in FITS - ARC, WARC, SGML and shapefiles. At least for our internal development of FITS at Harvard our current highest priority is adding support for video - most likely by integrating MediaInfo. This is a big gap area in the tool and we will need it soon.

I don't know which version of FITS (and Jhove) Archivematica 1.0 uses. When we made the most recent FITS release (0.8) we considered updating it to use Jhove 1.9 but found bugs related to how it handled the JP2 format when we tested it so we decided to hold off for now.

Odd. I'm sure the JP2 code hasn't changed in a long time. Have the bugs
been reported on SourceForge?

The bugs were not with Jhove itself. The Jhove mix output format changed after 1.5 (from 0.2 to 2.0 I think) and the fits mapping files were not updated. This caused most of the image metadata to not make it's way to the fits output and the mix created by fits.

If Jhove is updated the fits xslt and other mapping files need to be checked and updated as well. Given the effort to do this, the benefits it would provide, along with everything else that needed to be done it was decided that this would be done at a later time
