X86 client versions with PAE enabled do have a usable 37-bit (128 GB) physical address space. The limit that these versions impose is the highest permitted physical RAM address, not the size of the IO space. That means PAE-aware drivers can actually use physical space above 4 GB if they want. For example, drivers could map the "lost" memory regions located above 4 GB and expose this memory as a RAM disk.

Does docker windows containers, with Docker Desktop for Windows, have default memory limit?I have an application that was crashing when I run it in the container, but when I tried to specify --memory 2048mb parameter to the docker run command it seems to run fine. At least in the scenario where it was crashing before. This gives me impression that there is default memory limit, but I could not find it in the documentation. So my question is there memory limit and if it is where it is documented?

According to talks on Docker for windows Github issues ( ), when Docker for Windows is run under Windows 10, it is actually using a Hyper-V isolation model (and process model is not accessible in Win 10 scenario).

NOTE: Switching to Linux containers and playing with the "Settings Resources > Advanced" options only modifies the VM resources for running Linux containers, and not Windows containers.

It seems that it heavily depends on you configuration. If you run docker containers in, lets call it hyper-v mode, the memory limit seems to be about 512mb. You can extend the given memory with the "-m" option for docker run. Assigning 2 gb have not been a problem.

Unfortunately, its totally different for windows server containers. There the starting memory limit is 1gb and you can decrease it with the "-m" option. We did not find a way to increase the memory for those containers.

You can also set the memory used by docker by editing the json file C:\Users\Personal\AppData\Roaming\Docker\settings.json . Look for a property called MemoryMiB and update its value to be the number of megabytes you want your docker installation to use.

A user is doing calculations in Excel on very large sheets (upwards of 500mb) even with 16GB of ram, Excel (64-bit) will eat up all existing memory,I have seen it use upwards of 11GB of system memory.

On Windows Server, you could do this using a tool called the Windows System Resource Manager which can limit the amount of working set that a process uses. This tool is installable (not installed by default) through the Add Features console on Windows Server 2008 R2.

If the problem is that you're having trouble doing other things on the computer at the same time, you might want to try reducing Excel's CPU priority. So if you run something else, Excel will be forced to stop and wait since your program has a higher priority. It will take longer to finish, but you should be able to do other things at the same time.

You haven't shown any troubleshooting results, thus far, that leads me to believe that the issue is being caused by the "HEAP's MAX_SIZE Env Variable", nor have you shown any evidence that the variable isn't being assigned the value that you are attempting to assign to it. I am not saying that the issue isn't being caused by the env Variable. However, I am saying, that more troubleshooting needs to be done to know for certain, what the underlying cause to your issue is..

Personally, from what you have shown the community thus far, I believe that the problem is due to running out of memory in a location other than the heap, which if your using a typical PC with Windows 10, its probably your machine that doesn't have enough memory, not period, but at the moment you attempt to do the download.

I use Linux, but I got Windows for Free because it was cheaper for me to buy a new PC, and upgrade it, than buy the parts seperatly. I never boot to windows, so its always sitting as an untouched fresh install.

However, I have Windows PRO, this allowed me to disable much of the telemetry, and I found that if I disabled windows telemetry and some other features windows was much more performant. When windows would use 15+ Linux would be at 12+ GB, that's still around a 25-20% gain of memory though.

But as it turns out there is a typo: The code snippet you added as part of your question uses the Node Command-line Flag syntax, as the syntax for the Node Environment Variable, this is incorrect, as they use different sets of characters. At first glance, they look identical, but if you look at the 2-part MD table I created below, you'll see there is actually a pretty big difference between the two

The command above configures the "Max_Old_Space" Env Var. The program that I asked you to "Copy-&-Paste" into the file "test.js" prints the result of the commands Environment configuration change. It shows that every time you set the Env Var to something different, the Env Var is different during "Run Time". Its important to double note, its a variable, an "Environment Variable", it doesn't actually change the size of the heap, the value it represents is just saying that:

...which does not instantly mean node is able to accomplish such sizes, hell, you could set it to 10e1000 MBs if you wanted, and it would mostly likely accept that number as a valid configuration. I tested all kinds of different stuff, and there is no doubt that you can set it several hundred times more than the amount of ram you actually have. In other words, its a variable, (i.e. an address to a location in memory that holds a binary value), there shouldn't be any issue setting it. It is far more likely that your machine is unable to allocate the amount of space needed, 8GB of RAM, when you only have 16GBs, can be, for some systems, a large amount to offer to a single process, especially f your running Windows, or MacOS. Linux is king in resource intensive situations.

The NODE_OPTIONS should work, especially in the environment variable. However, some of them should be underscores instead of hypens. Try --max_old_space_size=8192 in the NODE_OPTIONS environment variable instead. Here is a link to support that.

The large address aware flag ist a flag set by the linker when linking the compiled program. Normally every 64-bit executable should have it set. If not, you get a maximum of 2GB even for 64-bit processes.

The first command will only allocate the virtual memory addresses and does not touch them, the second one also touches the memory. So the first one shows you what is possible with your system resources, the second one goes up to the limit your RAM and pagefile can handle.

My previous laptop (which had some great specs) I noticed that when Excel Memory Usage rose above 1,800 MB that it would start behaving badly and do really random weird stuff (Example: Randomly freeze for short periods of time, click in a cell and it does not recognize that you clicked on it, but the data is in the formula bar, and you can change it. These are just two off the top of my head, there are many other random things as well).

Now I have a new laptop with amazing specs, and I am using Microsoft Office 365 Enterprise 4 64-Bit version with the latest updates installed. I am still noticing that Excel is having issues when the Excel program memory goes above 1,800 MB. What is the deal? Does Excel have a limit on how much memory it uses? I did check my options and I'm using all threads with no limits listed.

I am considering using Apache 32-bit for a Moodle installation on a Windows 2008 R2 64-bit/16GB server. Since the available memory affects the number of concurrent of users that can be served, I was wondering how the 2GB memory limit on 32-bit Windows processes affects Apache+PHP.

Disclaimer: I'm not a Windows admin. I believe the most common setup like this with regard to Apache 2 is to use the winnt Multi Processing Module (MPM), with a configurable thread pool size (default is 250 or so). This means you'll have a single process with many threads, so that process will be the one subject to the 2G limitation.
