I decrypted (and disabled encryption on) my install (using occ encryption:decrypt-all) and then downloaded my files, but the files were still encrypted. I have the keys that the server used and the recovery password.

You also need the database because the files were signed with database information. In theory, you should be able to recover files without the signature check but this would need a modification of the code.

A master key is used. This is the default if encryption was enabled for the first time with Nextcloud 13 or later or if it was enabled by the admin with the occ command occ encryption:enable-master-key. In this case there is only one key used for all files of all users, the private key is encrypted with the instance password. In order to decrypt all files with the occ command you only need the private master key, the file key and the database.

@suntorytimed: Would you accept to take your solution as an answer to this question? For problems, we could refer to your repository and there is still an issue on the bug tracker in case there should be an official tool one day.

@tflidd I assume that my second post is a solution for this problem. At least as long as the user does have a Nextcloud instance with the database, files and keys in place. As long as the decryption only fails because of the wrong signature this answer would help recover the encrypted files.

I have submitted the empty string check as a fix to the upstream project. Even though this might not happen so often it is still better than having an exception (but I let the maintainers decide this). If this is merged the user only has to deactivate the checkSignature() by adding a return true;. I would still prefer an option call in occ though.

I found some encrypted files with encrypted filenames on my HDD and would like to decrypt them. I have a free account. Do you have an advice? Installing new Boxcryptor Drive doesn't recognize my files/folders as encrypted ones so Decryption is not offered in the right-click-menu. Files have been encrypted with Boxcryptor 1.0.0.
Thanks for your help in advance

Mattis Only the Dropbox option is checked on the Locations tab .
In Boxcryptor Drive I can manage (encrypt/decrypt) files in a folder created with a newer version of Boxcryptor. This folder contains a file named 'FolderKey.bch'.
But in an other folder that was created with Boxcryptor 1.0.0.0 all file names are encrypted except one named '.encfs6.xml'. This folder and the files inside it are not recognized by Boxcryptor.

Further to the news that Boxcryptor is to be shutdown, I have tried to decrypt my data. However, I have a problem as a number of my files and folders were encrypted when I had a Boxcryptor Unlimited Business subscription (for 5 years) and I had file and folder name encryption enabled. I currently don't have a business subscription which is required for Boxcryptor to encrypt or decrypt file and folder names. As a result my file and folder names are all shown in Chinese characters - please see the attached screenshot.

Boxcryptor is not allowing me to purchase a new business subscription to re-enable the file/folder name encryption. I emailed sup...@boxcryptor.com 9 days ago for help with this and attached 5 invoices for unlimited business subscriptions that I purchased previously. To date, no one has got back to me.

Thanks for your help. You are correct - it would appear that this is an error on my part and I have got confused when trying to decrypt my files in a hurry. I've managed to sort it now, so I'm afraid this is a case of user error...

I'm pretty sure this has been asked and answered before, but I am failing to find a close enough match here, or elsewhere in my searching for comfort. Closest I found was this the thread at the forum here: /t/decrypt-partial-version-of-crypt/4683. Which I think answers the question, but I wanted to be super clear before I planned on the assumption.

The problem is, my sister who is also running the macOS client, got many of her photos silently encrypted without ever noticing because her client was suddenly happy to see e2e encryption being available and used it for (some) files (I guess those which were modified).

All I see is how to put files on Sandisk Secure Access but nowhere does it say how you decrypt and get them off again so they will be just like the original you put on there. Can anyone help? Nothing aboiut this in the startup guide.

My problem I think is similar to those already mentioned. When I copy files into SecureAccess 2.0 vault there is no problem but when I try to pull a file out of the vault, my file is an Excel spreadshet it fails. It fails in a particular manner, inside the vault my file is 14 kb in size but when I copy or move this file out of the vault the size shrinks to 2 kb and I receive this error message:

I had the same problem but was able to get through it by doing a drag and drop. The trick was to drag the file over to where you are pasting and continue holding the right mouse button until the cursor turns into what looks like a folder (sort of) and then release. It wouldnt decrypt and move the file without the holding of the button. Hope this helps.

Generally, some people never keep their stick plugged in, especially online. Rather, they keep it hidden in a secretive place depending on the level of sensitivity, and may not encrypt the data at all. On the other hand, if the stick is carried about with the possibility of being lost or stolen, or contains serious documentation, then it would be wise to do both, i.e., encrypting and enshrouding the device beyond detection of its presence. In extreme cases, you can encrypt at least one character of your password by using a foreign letter you cannot type. But, the ability to remove the flash-drive is well enough for common security.

As for the lost files, something may have gone wrong during the encryption process. Perhaps, cutting these files from the vault folder and temporally pasting them elsewhere, then reverse the action by cutting and pasting back into the vault may work. Do this procedure without logging in. Normally, I usually leave a copy of an unencrypted file before encryption. If OK, I then overwrite (not delete as nothing is truly deleted) the original with a blank file which can be used for other data later on. Hope all of this helps.

BTW, I mentioned encrypting passwords with a letter that cannot be typed. This means with the use of standard fonts enter a key-code. When you look at a character map each block with a letter outside the normal keyboard has a code. Some blocks are empty but have a code. For example: in a situation where you cannot separate two words with a space, you can enter a blank character (no-break-space): abbybritton would be entered, abby Alt+0160 britton = abby britton. But, look on the bright side. Testing the encryption first before you dismiss the original is a good idea. And in a truly severe case, I still transfer data to a disk only I know of its whereabouts. Good Luck!

A long time ago, I had a Sookasa account integrated with Dropbox. During that time, a folder was accidentally deleted in an unrecoverable way, but later reappeared on a computer that hadn't been synced in a long time. So I have my old Sookasa files, but they're encrypted. Sookasa has since been acquired and shut down and there's no support. They used to offer a decryption tool, but the link is now broken. Does anyone have this tool or know another way to get it?

Sookasa has a large number of important records encrypted from my business. They closed down over a couple of months and never had anyone you could speak with directly when their tacit email directions did not perform as stated. I hope there are others with locked up files who could support some type of class action legal remedy. I dont think they allowed enough support to accommodate their clients. I was working on the road last spring and didnt have the band width to permit me to download the large files I have to a local computer , which was neccessary to do in order to decrypt . There was not decryption offered to work within Dropbox on line. DROPBOX should have been our advocate to allow us to decrypt files in the cloud, which was offered in the large business category. I spent days downloading files local , decrypting and attempting to re-upload. I never got through it in time. ( 10 years of files.) I WANT MY FILES BACK.

So,,,,your response of "Dropbox themselves have no idea who/what people do with files due to how they are encrypted. " is actually an uninformed ,snide cast-off of a legitimate inquiry / problem. Go back to your romance novel.

Actually, @Mark's response is correct. Sookasa is not a Dropbox product. It was owned by Barracuda. It may have had integration with Dropbox, but Dropbox didn't (and doesn't) provide support for the product. You need to contact Barracuda.

Actually, Mark is the one that is correct. From Dropbox's own page "Sookasa, a Dropbox Premier Partner". That is what made your service HIPAA compliant and usable by Medical Providers. Every time Dropbox made a change to it's coding Sookasa would put out a notice that they are working with Dropbox to get access back to files. The last time I checked Dropbox was not open sourced. _GB/app-integrations/sookasa
