The Futurist Manifesto was written by F.T. Marinetti in 1909 as a proclamation of a new era of human history that plows through the boundaries of Romanticism and reason in celebration of absurdity and a ridding of moral responsibility that would impede on the development of the industrial world. The manifesto opened by painting a picture of a world where bodies, movement and communication is interchangeable amongst species and elements around us, describing his feelings and thoughts with animistic over-tones before announcing the plan for complete domination in the name of progress, emphasizing the beastliness of our nature, our inability to escape it, and proposes to instead fall in love with it, become it and fully embody it, proudly.
The relevance of the contradictory interplay between the living and the lifeless, the ensouled and the soulless significantly contributes to our experiences and modes of interactions in contemporary times. What and who defines animal and what and who defines human? What and who defines object, what and who defines subject these days?
The dismissal of reason and rationality in the name of progress has led us down a path where we are responding to our more animal - machinic impulses, which, according to Descartes, consists of a kind of programming to just keep going without reflection, like termites destroying a tree to make a mound or wasps building a hive, we take over miles and miles of land all over the world to build cities and factories. Our roads span the land to connect us like root systems, our internet connecting us like a rhizome.
In fact, adult human beings have created a society that actually directly mimics and mirrors the phenomenon of nature, with production following similar laws, but instead of doing this work amongst nature and in harmony with it, we are creating a hyper-reality, a mirror image of nature itself, produced separately by humans, and existing almost entirely separately of nature.
On August 19, 2022, a new man versus nature film will grace the big screen: Beast. Starring Idris Elba, the actor will find himself going head-to-head with a lion on a murderous path. This movie is directed by Baltasar Kormkur and distributed by Universal Pictures. Kormkur is known for his survival movies, having directed Adrift and Everest. Along with Elba, the film stars Leah Jeffries (Percy Jackson and the Olympians), Sharlto Copley (District 9), and Iyana Halley (This is Us).
The definition of a natural horror film is simply a subgenre of horror that features natural forces that poses a threat to the human characters. Usually, these natural forces are plants or animals. There is no limit to what can be the opposing force of humans. This subgenre can intermix with other genres, such as survival.
The stories of mankind versus animals have been written long before film. In fact, a book inspired the movie that is considered the first natural horror film. Moby Dick. It is a classic story that centers around the idea of man versus whale. The adaptation of the movie was titled Sea Beast, a silent film that was released in 1926. It was directed by Millard Webb, and from there, the genre grew and shaped itself into many paths.
All the films listed above have had an impact on society of some kind. Jaws is the most notable, as there have been numerous studies done on the effect that these films have had. A study done by researcher and professor at the University of South Australia, Brianna Le Busque, stated:
The question we are asked to think about, as Candaele and Kovvali have, is what to make of this situation: what is the point of struggling to remain in this dangerous and, for us city slickers, gross, world. The movie is directed, I believe, primarily at urban sophisticates who are supposed to feel a bit queasy at the prospect of using their bare hands to bash the heads of catfish in and rip crabs apart. But we are supposed to see that in our sterile environment, with out carefully parted hair and packaged fish, we have lost something essential to a fully authentic human life. Living closer to nature is more dangerous, but more real and more meaningful.
The earliest examples of art we have are cave paintings of animals, and part of the fascination we have with these paintings is the feeling that they were a way for their creators to leave something of themselves behind. We first see Oryxes in the film as a tattoo on the leg of the teacher, and this tattoo is a depiction of those cave paintings. Beasts of the Southern Wild is about living with nature, and the struggle against it.

Rowling both in her stories and in the Fantastic Beasts film series.
In the Museum's breathtaking Waterhouse Gallery, viewers will encounter legendary beasts next to dazzling specimens and historic objects from the world-leading scientific collection. Spellbinding digital installations and iconic wizarding world elements from the Fantastic Beasts film series will add an extra touch of magic.
For the first time, visitors will see a tiger and a Galpagos marine iguana alongside wizarding world specimens including an Erumpent horn and the dragon skull from Professor Lupin's classroom. They will learn about the character of Magizoologist Newt Scamander, who made his first appearance in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Like the Museum's own scientists, Newt also dedicates his life to better understanding and protecting wildlife and the environments they rely on.
'A spectacular celebration of science and nature packed full of surprises and mesmeric experiences, it will be impossible to leave without wanting to learn more about the wonders of our planet and how we can all better protect it.'
Visitors will be able to compare the camouflage tactics of a jaguar to that of the wizarding world's Demiguise and the mating rituals of the peacock spider to the wizarding world's Erumpent. They will also come face to face with a giant oarfish, the world's longest bony fish. This monster of the oceans is thought to be the inspiration for mythical sea serpents around the world.
Towards the end of the exhibition, visitors will discover that, like many of the fantastic beasts, real-world animals need our help. Taking inspiration from the stories of dedicated conservationists and scientists and inspired by Newt's commitment to the beasts in the wizarding world, visitors will leave with a clear understanding of why it is more important than ever to care for and protect the rich biodiversity of our planet.
Offering exclusive access behind the scenes at both the Natural History Museum and Warner Bros. Studios, the documentary will dive deep into the bewitching secrets, marvellous wonders and surprising truths behind a host of fantastic beasts, both real and imagined.

Roberto Portela Miguez and Efstratia Verveniotou, scientists at the Natural History Museum, collect an Erumpent horn for the Natural History Museum's major new exhibition Fantastic Beasts: The Wonder of Nature, which will open Spring 2020. In the words of Newt Scamander, the Erumpent is a large grey African beast of great power from the wizarding world. Weighing up to a tonne, the Erumpent may be mistaken for a rhinoceros at a distance.
