Need help in confirming the ID of the following 4 fishes in this

1. Malabar Spiny Eel : Macrognathus Malabaricus (Guentheri)

2. Silver Algae Eater: Garra Mullya

3. Striped Panchax? : Aplocheilus Lineatus

4. unidentified

 

Location: Meenachil River, Kottayam, Kerala (Western Ghats)

Date: Jan 2008

Dear Shreekant,

Thanks for the comments.

1. Cross checked again, I had made a mistake. I guess it is the
tire track eel (mastacembelus armatus), which is not so rare
among the spiny eels.

2. Yes the mouth is suctorial. These fishes are gregarious in character.
They are often found attached (sucking) to the stones, rocks in
the river. If you place your leg in the stream, they will tickle you by
sucking over. Common in Kerala.

4. Yes, it is very beautiful and we had got a lot of these fries.
In our pond, they used to give a shark like appearance while moving,
because of their dorsal fin. They are but small fishes.
Sizes similar to or less than Puntius melanampyx I guess.

Hello,

I am clueless about No. 1 and 4..
No. 2 seems to be Garra mullye, but it also reminds me of Crossocheilus
latius. How is the mouth? Sucktorial?
No.3 is definitely Aplocheilus lineatus

The unidentified (no.4) is really beautiful!
Do keep us posted if you are able to ID it.
