FRESH WATER FISHES OF INDIA: FIELD GUIDE
The book of Dr Nilesh Heda, Rufford Small Grant Recipient, has been published by the Vigyan Prasar, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India as a part of International Year of Planet Earth. The book has received preface from the notable ichthyologist Dr. Rema Devi.
India is rich in its Inland Fish Fauna with about 940 species known from its rivers, lakes and estuaries. This constitutes about 38 % of the Indian Ichthyofauna and are of considerable economic and scientific value. Of these about 500 species are primary freshwater fishes with around 65% endemic, cloistered in the two hot spots of India, the Western Ghats and the North East. Many of these are unique to certain stretches of the various rivers especially the upper reaches and many more new species are being reported from these forested hills. However, threats to these fauna are aplenty, with urbanization, deforestation, habitat loss, pollution, over-harvesting, and culture of exotics. The only way for a fish enthusiast to save the fish and its habitats is creating awareness among the people. In this context, knowledge of the fish fauna of a region is the first step towards conservation. This pictorial handbook including 116 species from Central India, by a young researcher, Dr. Nilesh Kamalkishor Heda, will serve as a handy tool to hook the beginner and other nature lovers into this field. With his background on fish ecology from the prestigious Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, he has made the book an interesting one with several anecdotes on fishing methods, food and medicinal value and folklore.
