Dear friends and colleagues,

All across the world and especially in South Asia, Dams and barrages have had a huge negative impact on biodiversity, livelihoods, indigenous communities and the entire riverine ecosystem. Despite this, efforts at ameliorating these impacts on fisheries, biodiversity, livelihoods, sacred sites, downstream populations, etc., have been very limited and most of the times, unaddressed. India is now on a dam building spree, damming rivers in some of the most ecologically and culturally critical regions in the Western and North Eastern Himalayas and Western Ghats.

With this background, South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers and People (www.sandrp.in) along with Samvardhan and its partners will be organizing a side event on the 'Impacts of Dams on Biodiversity: Socio-ecological dimensions in the context of Climate Change' where will be looking at the impacts, as well as the way forward through the CBD, Governance mechanism, community initiatives, scientific research, etc.,

Side event Number: 2861
Date: 8th October 2012
Time: 13.15-14.45
Venue: Room 1.02, Level 1

Speakers include representatives from Civil Society Organizations, Biodiversity experts, Fisheries Scientist, Official from Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India (TBC), and Researchers.

Delegates and colleagues interested in the issue are welcome to join us at this side event and take part in the discussions!

Apologies for cross posting, if any

Thanks and Regards,

Nilesh
