Hello Fishers IOD fleet !
Below are the notes from the IOD world meeting that happened this past Saturday. Thank you to John Burnham who was our Fishers representative on the meeting ..Also in attendance was Beth who is retiring from the executive board and Oliver who now sits executive board as our Fishers Rep.. Thank you to both .. Anyways please have a look below…Importantly , A newly passed regulations to have 8 races in a worlds qualifying series which should not be an issue for us but we might build in some safety measures in our si s … The worlds are probably going to be in Nantucket but they need to borrow boats … I’m not exactly sure why but not too worried about it at this point other than our boats are not rigged for nantucket conditions.. Everyone should plan on a spinnaker sail purchase for next winter . Anyways, Have a look below..
Happy New Year,
JF
Here's the agenda with notes added:
1. Call to Order (Craig Davis)
2. Roll Call (Chris Gould) - all fleets but Tonsberg and St. Mawes were represented
3. Recognition of Fishers Island Fleet for the 2021 IOD World Championship
President Craig Davis - congratulated us on our prodigious efforts to host the Worlds, acknowledged the challenges we faced in running the regatta (particularly weather) and the use of a new format that might be a model for smaller fleets to host the Worlds but presented us with difficulties due to ambitious schedule, etc. He was kind and professional about it but indicated as Beth has told us from WCA Executive meetings that there were aspects that some competitors felt didn't work out as hoped. He also said it's important to keep working on formats that small fleets can use because we we may be seeing more small fleets such as the Gibson's Island fleet that may have 3 boats sailing next year, so "the problem isn't going to go away."
4. Presentation of Minutes of the Jan. 8, 2022 meeting (Chris Gould)
6. Reports of Committees:
a. Executive — Craig Davis said the Exec Comm. had focus on borrowed boat insurance and staging of signature events this year. While they found the insurance through Gowrie in the U.S. that could cover a Chester regatta, that is a moot point at the moment so they haven't purchased the insurance for the year ahead. Goals for the year ahead, he said, are to encourage the resumption of more invitationals and interfleet events, and to promote diversity in the fleets, especially introducing more younger sailors. He also talked about communications and marketing. He called out the Swedish fleet for doing a great job with their local marketing, especially through Facebook.
b. Technical—The chair, Peter Wickwire, was not in attendance, so there was no report. A member from one fleet said they last met in July. The focus for the next year is to bolster the knowledge base for events to help organizers get an event up and running more easily.
c. Communications—Craig is seeking a new Communications Director and functioning communications committee. He has asked each fleet to nominate someone to generate content from their fleet. He also wants to restart the quarterly Traveller newsletter.
7. Fleet Reports (Craig Davis)
- Craig said Tom Price and others expect to have 3 IODs at Gibson's Island next summer, maybe 4, so we may see the development of a new fleet there.
- At Chester, apparently 2 wooden boats have been scrapped as beyond repair and another boat was sold to Gibson's Island. However, Shawn Mulrooney has kept all the important pieces including the keels and plans to build a new boat and no doubt, with encouragement, would build a couple and get Chester back up to the size needed to host the Worlds.
8. Designation Championship sites
- The discussion of the 2023 Worlds is zeroing in on Nantucket and it's looking good although they don't have final board approval. The key point is that they may need to borrow 3 boats from us to do so. That's something we'll need to look at as a point of urgency, I expect.
- If the worlds aren't held at Nantucket for some reason, they will probably turn to Northeast Harbor as a candidate and see if that can be put together.
- Norway is scheduled to host the worlds in 2024 but can't be ready to do it for 2023.
- If Nantucket does host the Worlds in 2023, Northeast Harbor would probably be in line for 2025.
9. Proposed amendments to Championship Regulations CR 4.1.B and CR 4.1.D
- Both of these amendments passed. They require us to have at least 8 qualifying races, so we should be sure we have a plan to fit in extra races by, for example, counting the first weekend races in August if we aren't at 8 come the end of July.
- I had to leave the call before the second proposal was voted on. Beth, can you describe that and anything else below that should be included?
10. Report of the Nominating Committee / Election of Officers
-The new slate passed, with Craig continuing as president and Greg Mancusi-Ungaro as executive VP. Our new rep from Fishers Island is Oliver Parsons. (Thank you Oliver, and to Beth for her years of service in the role.)
11. Any Other Business
12. Adjournment (Craig Davis)
