Food sticks to feeding wand

Hi. My daughter and I got the Fish School kit and she is attempting to
train her pet fish, Goldy, as a science fair project. (Her question
is, "Who learns faster, dogs or fish?" Her dog, Buddy, just finished
obedience school and so she is going to try to teach both Goldy and
Buddy to go through a hoop.)

Anyway, we are having trouble with the food sticking to the feeding
wand. Goldy has been very reluctant to approach the wand and then,
when she does and we open it, she swims away and the food doesn't
float out so she doesn't get her reward. We are using flakes, which
may be the problem, but we tried even the tiniest pellets and she
seems to spit them back out, like maybe they're too hard for her to
eat? We even wipe out the feeding wand between insertions to make sure
the chamber is dry to begin with.

Any suggestions? Perhaps something else we can put in the wand? The
science fair is less than two weeks away.

Thanks!

Hi,

As you observed, pellets sometimes release better than flakes from the feeding wand, although many people use flakes successfully.  You should always soak the pellets for a couple minutes before feeding them to your fish to avoid bloat. Plus, making them softer should make them more palletable and less likely to float to the surface. Give that a try and see if it works better.

Good luck to your daughter in her science fair. Please come back and tell us how it goes!

We soaked some pellets, but the fish still spits them out. I think she
doesn't like them. Finicky fish?

Anyway, we discovered that using tweezers to insert the flakes into
the feeding wand and sort of break them up makes them release better.

My daughter finished her science fair project today. "Goldy" learned
to follow the wand to and through the hoop. And Buddy learned to jump
through a hula hoop.

Her hypothesis was wrong. The dog learned the trick faster. But she
still thinks Goldy is pretty smart. :-)

Congrats to you and your daughter - that sounds like a very good result. I hope she does well!
