Several years ago, I used an iPad to present shape cues to my goldfish for specific dance behaviors that I trained them to do. It worked quite well. When I first got the iPad, I hoped to allow goldfish to play virtual music apps by targeting the iPad with their mouths. But, sadly, when I immersed the iPad (inside a plastic bag), the pressure of the water activated the whole touch screen all at once, rendering the device unusable.

Here's the film we made with our goldfish dancers:

I trained the "pirouette" (spin) using standard shaping techniques (more info on that in The Bubble Blog and on the R2 blog - http://r2fishschool.com/blog/ ). Once the behavior was solid, I flashed the ipad with its Spin symbol at the start of the fish's spin. After many reps doing that, I started showing the Spin symbol farther in advance of the spin behavior, until eventually the symbol became a true cue. The fish would then spin whenever she saw the symbol.

We actually have developed a trademarked method for fish to play music. Check it out:

Thanks Diane for sharing your experience.

Could you share some more on Dance behaviour? How did you do that?

Do you think a fish playing a music is more feasible with augmented reality? Like AR Piano apps..whereby fish will touch AR image instead of the screen?
