Message from Amy: Did you notice Sunday’s riddle posted on the whiteboard? “What can you NEVER eat for breakfast?” A few children and adults guessed the answer: Lunch or Dinner! Riddles are a fun way to stretch our brains and tickle our funny bones. If you or your children have any favorites, please let me know and I could post them one Sunday.
Our first session of RE classes was full of sharing, movement, and community building. I am grateful to all our children, youth, teachers, teaching assistants and Dawn, our Assistant Director of RE for making our cooperative program so meaningful. There are still some teaching slots open for the Winter and Spring terms as well as opportunities to help out in other ways. If you have not done so already, please register your family. The online form can be found on the front page of our website:

afre...@firstparish.org What’s Happening this Sunday Children in Kindergarten through Grade 7 begin in the service with their families. Following our Children’s Message, children leave the Sanctuary for their classroom with their teachers. All RE classes are held until 11:15am. Parents of children Preschool- 3rd Grade are asked to pick up their children in their classrooms listed below. Older children and youth will be dismissed to Coffee Hour.
Little RE – Lower Level
Teachers: Siobain Mitchell and Jason White
Teaching Assistants: Claire, Olivia, Nuffi, Robert and Hannah
Our youngest children (0-4 years) will play in a caring environment with time for making friends, reading stories, playing outdoors, eating snack, and craft projects. Parents are invited to bring their children to the classroom fifteen minutes before worship service begins (9:45 a.m.).
Kindergarten Class – Lower Level
Teachers: Leanne Baxter & Jeanne Williams
This Sunday our story is “Roxaboxen” by Alice McLerran about a group of friends who create a town with rocks, boxes, cacti and sand. This story celebrates the power of imagination, place, and cooperative play.
1st Grade Class – Lower Level
Teachers: Vivienne Aldrich & Jen Izzo
This Sunday our story is “Frederick” by Leo Leonni about a group of chatty field mice preparing for winter. Instead of storing grain and corn, Frederick collects colors and words to see them through the cold months. How do memories and poetry feed us?
2nd Grade Class – Ripley Room
Teachers: Kimberly Brainerd and Caroline Minkin
3rd Grade Class – Greeley Room and Lawn
Teachers: Kelly McIntosh and Valerie Vallancourt
“Hearing Your Inner Voice” – Using a story drawn from the Buddhist tradition called “The Wise Teacher Test,” our children will explore what it means to follow the guidance of your inner voice or conscience. They will explore questions like:
What do you do when someone tells you to do something that you know deep down is not right? Is it okay to do something wrong if you do not get caught? How do you know what is right and wrong? 4th Grade Class – Brooks Room*
Teachers: Ayres Stiles-Hall and Michelle Fortier
5th Grade Class – Bulkeley Room*
Teachers: Meghan Giannetto and Kristin Haddad
“Looking In/ Looking Out” is our theme for the 4th and 5th Grade Classes this Sunday. We will create two self-portraits one of our outward appearance and one of our inner selves. What will they show about us? Our story will be about Charles Darwin and how his early experiences led to his life’s work.
*Please note that we have switched classrooms to better accommodate the size of these groups!
Neighboring Activists, 6th-7th Grades– Hugh Cargill Community Gardens
Teachers: Stuart Johnstone & Amy Rensko
Our Neighboring Activists will be lending a hand with Fall cleanup at the local community gardens this Sunday. They will start in the service and walk over together following the Children’s Message. Please wear appropriate gardening clothes and bring a pair of gardening gloves, if possible. 6th and 7th grade parents who would like to help out are more than welcome to join the fun. We will aim to return to First Parish close to the 11:15 end time for RE, and your child will meet you at coffee hour as usual. If you’d like to join us or have any questions, please e-mail Amy Rensko:

That's right, we're making a life size game, complete with giant dice, special game spaces, fun question cards, and more. If your family is in town on Columbus Day weekend, come join the fun!
