Message from Amy:
I hope that you are having a good week filled with seasonal celebrations. Autumn is one of my favorite seasons. I love the changing foliage and the crunch of leaves beneath my feet. In many traditions, it is believed that this is the time when the veil between the living and dead is thin. This is not scary but a time to honor loved ones who have passed away by lighting candles, telling stories, or putting photos of them on an altar or special place in our homes.

This Sunday we will be “Honoring Our Kin.” In the service we will be blessing the shawls given to church members who are grieving, sick or going through a difficult time. Our 6th and 7th Graders will be honoring our spiritual ancestors by visiting Sleepy Hollow with Rev. Gary Smith, our Minister Emeritus.

Happy Halloween! I hope that you are having fun dressing up. Costumes are a great way for all ages to express our interests or different sides of our personalities. Daylight saving ends on Saturday; remember to set your clocks back one hour. We could all use an extra hour of sleep!

In case you’re still looking for pumpkin carving ideas, here is a link to create a chalice with a small pumpkin:DIY-Pumpkin-Chalice “Alice the Chalice” is a website and Facebook page that I curate for UU families and friends.

Warmly,
Amy

What’s Happening this Sunday, November 1
Please read below to learn about what your child(ren) are exploring this Sunday!

Children in Kindergarten through Grade 7 begin in the service with their families. Following our Children’s Message, children leave the Sanctuary for their classroom with their teachers. All RE classes are held until 11:15am. Parents of children Preschool- 3rd Grade are asked to pick up their children in their classrooms listed below. Older children and youth will be dismissed to Coffee Hour.

Little RE – Lower Level
Teachers: Siobain Mitchell and Jason White
Teaching Assistants: Claire, Olivia, Nuffi, Robert and Hannah
Our youngest children (0-4 years) will play in a caring environment with time for making friends, reading stories, playing outdoors, eating snack, and craft projects. Parents are invited to bring their children to the classroom fifteen minutes before worship service begins (9:45 a.m.).

Kindergarten Class – Lower Level
Teachers: Leanne Baxter & Jeanne Williams
This Sunday our Spirit Play story is “Great Mystery of Creation”.

1st Grade Class – Lower Level
Teachers: Vivienne Aldrich & Jen Izzo
This Sunday our Spirit Play story is “The Lazy Bear”.

2nd Grade Class – Ripley Room
Teachers: Kimberly Brainerd and Caroline Minkin
We will help with the Shawl Blessing by passing out shawls and lap blankets during the service. Our RE class will be about Empathy. Our story is a Scottish folk tale about a seal hunter who wounds a seal and then is given a chance by the seals to experience how it feels, from their perspective, to be hunted. At home, parents and guardians are encouraged to talk about ways in which you practice empathy as a family, showing care for relatives and neighbors, helping those who are in need, or caring for animals.

3rd Grade Class – Greeley Room and Lawn
Teachers: Kelly McIntosh and Val Valancourt
Building on last week’s session on Empathy, this Sunday we will act out scenarios to consider what it is like to “stand in someone else’s shoes”. Any situation can have multiple perspectives. Our feelings toward someone and our understanding of their situation can change when we take time to step into their shoes.

4th Grade Class – Brooks Room & Bulkeley Room
Teachers: Ayres Stiles-Hall and Michelle Fortier
5th Grade Class – Brooks Room & Bulkeley Room
Teachers: Meghan Giannetto and Kristin Haddad
This Sunday both classes will combine to do puppet plays together. What happens when two people disagree or do not get along? How can we draw on our UU Principles to resolve the problem?

Neighboring Activists, 6th-7th Grades– Sleepy Hollow Tour
Teachers: Stuart Johnstone & Amy Rensko
All Saints Day! Extra Hour Sleep!
Our Minister Emeritus, Rev. Gary Smith will offer a special tour of Sleepy Hollow.
We’ll visit Anne Bush, Katharine Davis, and Harriet Lathrop. Which one wrote the Christmas song, “Little Drummer Boy”?
We’ll visit Edward Nealy, Franklin Sanburn, and Daniel Chester French. Who sculpted the Lincoln Memorial?
We’ll visit Ephraim Bull, Sam Staples, and William Wheildon. Who locked Thoreau in jail for the night?
Do not miss Gary’s great stories and honor our spiritual ancestors by placing roses on their graves.

8th Grade Drama Program – Parish Hall, 4:00 p.m.
Teacher: Katherine Akerley
Parent Coordinator: Kate Svrcek
“Folktales on Stage” is the name of the show that is taking shape. Katherine reports that the group’s improv skills have really taken off! There is one more script being developed. On Sunday, December 13th, they will perform for the RE classes at 10:15 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. for family and friends.

9th Grade – Coming of Age- Climbing the Family Tree, 4:30 p.m.
This is a special session where parents and guardians are asked to write a letter to their youth and share it within their youth’s COA Circle. Rev. Amy Freedman will be joining us for this time honored First Parish COA tradition. For more information, contact Bethany: BL...@firstparish.org
