Message from Amy
This weekend I am attending the Fall Conference of the Liberal Religious Educators Association (LREDA) in Morristown, NJ. The theme is “RE Without Walls: Technology, Theme-based Ministry, and Full Week Faith”. These topics are timely as we look to broaden religious exploration beyond Sunday mornings and to improve our communications with families. I look forward to being with over two hundred UU Religious Educators. An added perk is that my husband Peter will also be there as one of the keynote speakers and presenters. I look forward to sharing what I learned with all of you.

Our RE teachers have wonderful activities planned for this Sunday and Dawn will be at First Parish to support them.

Warmly,
Amy

Sock Puppet-palooza!
Do you have any extra socks? If you have any spare socks that you are willing to donate for puppet making, we promise to put them to good use. Please drop them off in the RE Office. Thanks!

CROP Walk this Sunday!
All are welcome! Come join the fun for a good cause! The Concord-Carlisle Pep Band will play on the front steps of First Parish starting at 1:30pm. Step-off at 2:15pm. Our local walk features the Banner Contest that our Neighboring Activists (6th and 7th Grades) are participating in. All young people are invited to the Parish Hall after the walk to create a T-shirt design for the 2016 CROP T-shirt. Funds raised by the Concord area CROP Walk go to Church World Service (CWS) for worldwide emergency relief and one quarter of funds raised provide contributions to the ten local supper/food pantry programs that we support. For more information or to register, check out Concord Crop Walk

What’s Happening this Sunday, October 25th
Please read below to learn about what your child(ren) are exploring this Sunday!

Children in Kindergarten through Grade 7 begin in the service with their families. Following our Children’s Message, children leave the Sanctuary for their classroom with their teachers. All RE classes are held until 11:15am. Parents of children Preschool- 3rd Grade are asked to pick up their children in their classrooms listed below. Older children and youth will be dismissed to Coffee Hour.

Little RE – Lower Level
Teachers: Siobain Mitchell and Jason White
Teaching Assistants: Claire, Olivia, Nuffi, Robert and Hannah
Our youngest children (0-4 years) will play in a caring environment with time for making friends, reading stories, playing outdoors, eating snack, and craft projects. Parents are invited to bring their children to the classroom fifteen minutes before worship service begins (9:45 a.m.).

Kindergarten Class
– Lower Level
Teachers: Leanne Baxter & Jeanne Williams
This Sunday our Spirit Play story is about Universalist minister John Murray.

1st Grade Class – Lower Level
Teachers: Vivienne Aldrich & Jen Izzo
This Sunday our Spirit Play story is “Wise People and the Elephant”.

2nd Grade Class – Ripley Room
Teachers: Kimberly Brainerd and Jeff Brainerd
2nd graders will be learning about the Shawl Ministry at First Parish. As a part of our Caring Connection, we give hand-knit shawls and lap blankets to members who are grieving, sick or in the midst of a hard time. Children are invited to bring a blanket, stuffed animal or lovey with them to church. On Sunday, November 1, this class will help with the Blessing of the Shawls during the service.

3rd Grade Class – Greeley Room and Lawn
Teachers: Kelly McIntosh and Val Vallancourt
This theme of this session is Empathy. The story is a folk tale from Scotland about a seal hunter who wounds a seal and then is given a chance by the seals to experience how it feels, from their perspective, to be hunted. At home, parents and guardians are encouraged to talk about ways in which you practice empathy as a family, showing care for relatives and neighbors, helping those who are in need, or caring for animals.

4th Grade Class
– Brooks Room
Teachers: Ayres Stiles-Hall and Dave McIntosh
5th Grade Class – Bulkeley Room
Teachers: Meghan Giannetto and Kristin Haddad
This Sunday both classes will make sock puppets, develop characters, and act out skits with their puppets. What happens when two people disagree or do not get along? How can we draw on our UU Principles to solve the problem? On November 1, the 4th and 5th Grades will combine to do puppet plays together.

Neighboring Activists, 6th-7th Grades– Emerson Room
Teachers: Stuart Johnstone & Amy Rensko
Note to Neighboring Activists & Parents:
Amy Rensko and I are looking forward to seeing the Neighboring Activists' two CROP Walk banners completed at Sunday’s RE and hope that all 6th and 7th graders will be able to contribute to this creative group effort. Since much work remains to be done and time will be tight, RE might be ending a bit late this week!

We hope that you and your families and friends will plan to attend and support CROP Walk, a fundraising event to relieve hunger both locally and worldwide. Banner contest entries will be presented in front of First Parish shortly after 1:30 on Sunday and the Neighboring Activists will need to be present to carry their banners. The CROP Walk will begin shortly after, and inside First Parish there will be a contest to design next year’s CROP Walk T shirt.

Most importantly, please donate to the cause and encourage your friends and neighbors to do so too. Those who collect 20 pledges get a free CROP Walk T shirt. Go to www.concordcrop.org and hit the “Registration” button, then click the link for the Crop Hunger Walk website. Be sure to select the “First Parish in Concord” team when making donations. Donations can also be made at the event on Sunday.

Hope to see you then!

8th Grade Drama Program – Parish Hall, 4:00 p.m.
Teacher: Katherine Akerley
Parent Coordinator: Kate Svrcek
“Folktales on Stage” is the name of the show that is taking shape. Katherine reports that the group’s improv skills have really taken off! There is one more script being developed. On Sunday, December 13th, they will perform for the RE classes at 10:15 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. for family and friends.

9th Grade – Coming of Age- No meeting 10/25

9th-12th Grade – Youth Group
, 7:00 p.m. in the Loft
Youth Program Director: Bethany Russell-Lowe
This Sunday the Youth Group will be playing Agree/Disagree. All are welcome! We meet every Sunday evening (except Holiday weekends) from 7-8:30 p.m. All are welcome! For more information, contact Bethany: BL...@firstparish.org

Halloween Costume Drive Update
Girl Scout Troop 75010 participated in a Halloween Costume Drive this month. First Parish is home to three 5th graders in the troop- Margot Venesy, Lauren Friess, and Ainsley Haut. With the help of First Parish members, they collected over 80 costumes that were then part of a giveaway in Lowell on October 18th. Thank you for all of your costume donations!

Open House at Islamic Center of Boston
Hello, First Parishioners,
Each spring, we bring our 7th grade Neighboring Faiths students to visit the Islamic Center of Boston (ICB), located in Wayland on route 20. We are always warmly welcomed, and our hosts take the time to give our students a short primer on Islam and answer any questions we may bring. While there, we also sit in on their Sunday afternoon prayer session.

Our contact there, Ms. Saadia Baloch, has asked me to spread the word about an open house that the ICB is holding this coming Sunday afternoon from 3:00 to 6:00pm. For more information about the open house, go to the ICB's website at www.icbwayland.org.

In the spirit of 'going out into the world in peace',
Jan Power
Neighboring Faiths program leader
