Dear Greek students,

Last Tuesday, I shared an update on Natalie and then we reviewed Chapter 9 on adjectives.

One of the issues we addressed is how to smooth out phrases and clauses in our translation. For now, it’s just fine to translate word-for-word, in a rather wooden, literal fashion. However, as time goes on, you’ll learn how the language behaves, where you can take the liberty to smooth things out in English, or where you really need to retain the literalness. For example, note the variations in this verse:

Ephesians 6:5a

Greek NT - Οἱ δοῦλοι, ὑπακούετε Iτοῖς κατὰ σάρκα κυρίοις μετὰ φόβου καὶ τρόμου

Interlinear – the slaves, obey those [who are] according to flesh masters with fear and trembling

NASB - Slaves, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling

HCSB - Slaves, obey your human  masters  with fear and trembling (ESV and NIV are very similar)

Eventually, it would be acceptable to translate this as the HCSB does, but for now, it’s ok to be more literal like the Interlinear or NASB.

We feel almost ready to dive into chapter 10 on third declension nouns, but e agreed to wait one more week before doing so. We will not have class next week due to an SBC trip Natalie and I will be taking up to Fresno. So, our next class will be Tuesday, Apr. 5. This is a great opportunity to review your vocab and reinforce any grammar sections you still feel week in.

Homework: please do Exercise 8 translation #4-6 (on p. 20) and Exercise 9 translation #4-6 (on p. 24). This will give you a good review of the last couple chapters. If you want to do further review, you should do Review #2 (chs. 6-9) beginning on p. 27 of Mounce’s workbook.

See you in two weeks!

Thanks,

Stephen
