HOLY EUCHARIST
" Holy Eucharist is the sacrament wherein our Lord Jesus Christ gives us His body and blood in the form of bread and wine"
Jesus instituted the Holy Eucharist in order to nourish and strengthen our spiritual life.
The holy Eucharist completes Christian initiation.
Jesus instituted the Holy
Eucharist at the Last Supper (on the day of passover feast) the night before He died.
When Our Lord instituted the Holy Eucharist the apostles were present.
Passover in Old Testament was liberation of Israel from Egyptian Slavery.
Passover in New Testament is liberation from sin.)
On the Passover day at the banquet,Christ instituted the
Holy Eucharist in this way:
He took bread, blessed and broke it, and giving it to His apostles, said:
"Take and eat; this is My body;"
then He took a cup of wine, blessed it, gave thank to God, and giving it to them, said:
"All of you drink of this; for this is My blood of the new covenant which is being shed for many unto the forgiveness of sins;"
finally, He gave His apostles the commission: "Do this in remembrance of Me."
Thus Jesus gave His own body and Blood as the spiritual food and drink to the disciples.
Also Jesus Commanded to repeat this actions and words to remember Jesus and what He did.
That is to remember the life, suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The Holy Eucharist is a sacrament and a sacrifice.
In the Holy Eucharist, under the appearances of bread and wine, the Lord Christ is contained, offered, and received.
The whole Christ is really, truly, and substantially present in the Holy Eucharist.
Holy Eucharist is the sacrament of communion, because by this sacrament we unite ourselves to Christ.
We participate with the whole community in the Lord's own sacrifice by means of the Eucharist.
By our participation in the Holy Eucharist, we become one in the body of the church.
We who participate in the same banquet should live in unity, loving and helping one another.
The sharing on the alter must lead us to sharing in life.
Those who participate in this banquet have to receive the body and blood with proper
preparation and devotion.
( this we will discuss in next class)
This week's Prayer: (This is the prayer we have to recite before
confession)
I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do;
and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the
angels and saints, and you,
my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the
Lord our God.
