Joseph Hahn is one of a few people on Earth who has experienced both. He saw the remains of nuclear fire in July 1950, when he rode with his infantry unit on a train through Hiroshima, a city still lying in rubble five years after the United States dropped the first nuclear weapon ever used in war.

Seven months later, in January 1951, Hahn cowered from enemy fire in a foxhole in North Korea on a night when the temperature dropped to 22 degrees below zero. The cold caused frostbite that cost him three toes on his right foot and the nerves in his right hand.

On Friday morning, Hahn hobbled on his damaged foot into the sunroom of his home. He sat in his wide brown reclining chair, opened a newspaper, and read a story on the front page about North Korea, this faraway place where the war was hot and then cold, and now is heating up again.

North Jersey veterans who served on the Korean peninsula watched the news this week with apprehension. Some fought in the war, which lasted from June 1950 until July 1953, when representatives of the United States, North Korea and China signed an armistice agreement, which remains in effect today, that sliced the Korean peninsula in half and established a demilitarized zone between North and South. Others served later, during the Cold War and beyond, as part of the enormous security force that lines the southern border of the demilitarized zone to protect South Korea from attack.

Even among those who served in combat, experiences vary. Some carry physical and emotional wounds with them all these years later; others escaped with few obvious scars. They also have different opinions about the current high tensions between North Korea and the United States, and whether Trump is to blame for escalating them.
