EMAIL INVITATION FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF CLIMATE CHANGE, ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT
Good afternoon,
As you may be aware, the department has released the draft Nature Repair Market Bill (the Bill) as an exposure draft for consultation on 23 December 2022. This draft bill sets out the framework legislation for the government’s proposed biodiversity market, announced in August 2022.
The consultation on the draft Bill is open until 24 February 2023.
As per Minister Plibersek’s commitment at the First Nations Roundtable, 14 November 2022, to discuss the Biodiversity Market (now referred to as the Nature Repair Market), we are committed to co-design, but prior to this we would really value your engagement and input on the draft Bill. This engagement will help us shape the market, future Indigenous engagement, and the co-design process so that the market works for First Nations people and organisations.
To assist with engaging in this consultation, we are holding 3, 1-hour meetings over the week of 13 February 2023 for First Nations groups:
· Tuesday 14 February 2023, 3.00 - 4.00pm
· Wednesday 15 February 2023, 2.30 – 3.30pm
· Friday 17 February 2023, 1.30 – 2.30 pm
These sessions will be the same meeting but held at different times to facilitate participation - so you only need to attend one of the three meetings. They will include a brief overview of the draft Bill by the department and then open up to questions and discussion.
As part of our consultations, we are also talking to departmental colleagues and First Nations organisations involved in the carbon market (such as the Indigenous Carbon Industry Network) to ensure that arrangements across the carbon and nature repair markets are as consistent as possible.
A Factsheet on Supporting the participation of First Nations people provides additional information on the Bill, including: First Nations rights, market participation and engagement in market design.
Please feel free to forward this invitation to the relevant people in your organisation and communities.
If you would prefer a one-on-one discussion prior to the consultation closing on 24 February, please contact the nature repair market team at naturerep...@dcceew.gov.au or Carlie Furlonger on 0414 635 670.
Kind regards
