Hi! I recently tried to set up FireSim on AWS EC2 following the official FireSim documentation. However, I encountered some issues:

  1. The FPGA Developer AMI mentioned in the documentation (version 1.12.2-40257ab5-6688-4c95-97d1-e251a40fd1fc) is no longer available for search.

  2. After failing to set up the environment, I reached out to AWS Support and was informed that F1 instances are no longer available to new users. They are only supported for users who have previously accessed them, and AWS plans to gradually replace them entirely with F2 instances.

Given this situation, I would like to ask:

  • Does FireSim provide support for F2 instances?

  • If so, what steps should users take to set up FireSim on F2 instances?

Any guidance or updates on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi, the information I have is that F1's will be removed from AWS in December.. six months away..  at that point, there will only be F2 instances.  If FireSim is not ported to F2.. then starting December, there will no longer be any means to run FireSim in AWS.  Are there plans to complete porting to F2 before F1's are removed in December?

Thanks,

Sean

We are planning to port to F2 to keep FireSim supported on AWS. Last I checked (a while ago), F2 doesn't support XDMA, which we need: https://github.com/aws/aws-fpga/issues/671 or https://github.com/aws/aws-fpga/blob/f2/User_Guide_AWS_EC2_FPGA_Development_Kit.md#aws-shells. Unfortunately, we are stalled until that is released since we need the DMA engine (feel free to comment on the issue to try to get AWS to move a bit faster). Once we see XDMA support added, we'll add it in.

Hope that helps.
