typing "slate" as url now leads me to bing search results, not slate.com (?)

How did this default change? I routinely just type in "nytimes" and
Firefox takes me to nytimes.com; "slate" for slate.com, etc.
Suddenly I'm being taken, instead, to a search-results list for the
bing search engine. How can I disable this behavior and go back to the
default Firefox?
(No idea how or when I made this switch.)
