Campus Party Europa 2012

Introduction.-

Telefonica Digital, in partnership with Mozilla, challenges web & mobile developers to drive innovation programming for the open web. During the Campus Party Europe, the participants will test the apps development for the new Firefox OS (Boot2Gecko). This is a new mobile platform based in HTML5, where the developers have the best from the web, with the power of native applications.

Description.-

The developers are challenged to program an application for Gaia, the user interface of Firefox OS, using HTML5 and the device’s capabilities, through the new Mozilla-proposed standard APIs.

The applications could belong to any category: games, social networks, productivity, e-inclusion, green apps, etc. Any Internet service can be integrated in the application: storage, maps, computing, payment, etc. Due to the Firefox OS target, mobile-first apps helping to drive mobile adoption in emerging markets are welcomed.

Considering the status of the development, the apps only ought to use the device’s APIs currently supported. For testing purpose, the developer should use the platform’s emulators; in addition, there will be some real devices. Developers can find lots of information about Firefox OS here.

IMPORTANT: Firefox OS software development kit is supported only for Linux or MacOS operating system. Other platforms are not recommended. Use them by your own risk.

The application should be programmed starting with the announcement of the challenge and finishing at the due date, August 25th at noon (12:00 p.m). All the code ought to be uploaded and accessible at GitHub. In addition, the teams have to submit a google doc including:

Short description of the team, with names and contacts. Photos and videos could make it funnier.
App description:

Main features i.e functionality.
Architecture: APIs, Internet Services & social network connectors.
UX: screen snapshots and screencasts.

The participants have to team in groups of 1 to 3 developers. The number of the developers in the team won’t be taken into account during the app evaluation. IMPORTANT: the challenge is limited to 50 teams. If there would be no free slot, we encourage the collaboration, integrating with accepted teams.

The challenge awards three prizes:

First € 1,500.
Second € 1,000
Third € 500

The jury, formed by members of Campus Party Innovation Team, Telefonica Digital & Mozilla, will determine the winners following the criteria:

Innovation and “like never before” factor
Technical excellence i.e APIs usage, integration with Internet services & performance
UX & coolness design.
Commercial viability, specially in emergent markets.
Mobile-first approach.

The winners will be announced during the Challenges Awards Event, on Saturday 25th evening.

Concerning to intellectual property and copyright, we assume that the teams are using only properly licensed material, including code and work arts. To avoid inappropriate use, we encourage to use materials only with open source and creative commons licenses.

The developers always own the intellectual property of their own code and work arts. The developers only grants rights to use references to the code, snapshots, videos and app screencast for PR & marketing purpose. In any case, in order to promote the community around Firefox OS, we encourage open source and creative commons licences for you code and work arts.

The participation in the challenge means all the participants accepts the terms and conditions of the challenge.

In order to manage the support to the developers, the Firefox OS CP Europe 2012 has been created. The participants can use it to ask for support, contribute with answers and collaborate during the challenge. In addition, during the Campus Party Europe, the participants in the challenge will have f2f technical support and advice in a specific section of the Arena.
