Hey Guys,

Firebug seems to not open (clicking on the bug on the bottom doesn't
open the pane) when firefinder is installed. It seems to be firefinder
that is causing the issue because when i disable it and restart
firefox, firebug opens again

Versions used:
-------------------
-OS: Ubuntu Linux 10.04 64 bit
-Firefox: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.6pre)
Gecko/20100610 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Namoroka/3.6.6pre
(i use the firefox daily build found here: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-daily/+archive/ppa
)
-Firebug: 1.5x: I tried this with various versions of firebug 1.5
(http://getfirebug.com/releases/firebug/1.5X/)
-Firefinder: 1.01

Steps to reproduce:
------------------------
Install firefinder from addons directory (https://addons.mozilla.org/
en-US/firefox/addon/11905/ ),
restart firefox
clicked on firebug bug icon in the bottom right but it didn't open
disabled firefinder
restarted firefox
clicked on the firebug bug icon in the bottom right and this time it
did open

any ideas? any further log info i can send?

Thanks,

Yuval

Hi Yuval,

Currently, I don't have a proper install of Ubuntu to test that build in, but I guess it's somewhat remotely related to that.
I've tried it on Mac with Firebug.1.5.4 and the Firefinder version available on the addons web site.

My guess is that it's either the Firefox version or maybe Firebug in conjunction with that version (since all it does is just populate a tab in Firebug the standard way all tabs are populated).

Have you tried with other Firebug extensions and experienced the same problem?

Best regards,
Robert

Hey Robert,

Yep, I have a boatload of other firebug extensions installed including
firequery, firecookie, firediff, eventbug... None of those seems to
cause the problem. When I disable/uninstall firefinder, firebug opens
no problem with all those other ones enabled. And the reverse is also
true. When i disable all of them and try to open firebug, it still
won't open if firefinder is enabled.

Hmm, I'd be surprised if there's anything OS specific about this
problem. Like you said, firefinder is basically following firebug's
tab populating conventions and not really doing anything that outside
that narrow box. So guess that leaves us with the firefox version or
something in firebug.

interestingly, when i installed firebug 1.6 branch it DID open while
firefinder was enabled, but firefinder did not show up on the tabs.

I tried a few other firefox binaries i had lying around (from
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/ ), like 3.5.4, 3.5.6,
3.5.9, and 3.7, and firebug refuses to open when firefinder is
installed.

Is there any sort of logging that firefox/firebug can offer to
diagnose errors silently happening?

I just tried this on my Firefox 3.6.3 windows machine, and couldn't reproduce. I do have an Ubuntu machine at home. I'm fairly new to that distribution, but I'll give this test case a go round when I get some time.

It would be wishful thinking to expect an extension error to show up in syslog. What about the error console that Firefox provides, I was under the impression that most of all the errors are logged out as JS to that console?

Yeah, I'm sorry...
I can't seem to find any errors and can't reproduce it. If I only know
where to look to fix this, I would, but right now I'm clueless...

If you find something out, please let me know!

Best regards,
Robert

I'm running

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.6pre) Gecko/20100614 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Namoroka/3.6.6pre

Firebug 1.5.4
Firefinder 1.0.1
I installed as many of the add-ons you had in your last email, yuvilio.
I was able to get the firefinder to pop up, but with a lag time of about 7 seconds. In some cases if I click, twice on the on/off button the panel will register both states of existence one right after the other. Meaning that firebug will never open, simply go right back to being closed. At least that's my hypothesis for why it would be behaving that way, we would need to see an event log or something to tell for sure.

I confirmed that, when double-clicking on the bug icon the firebug panel will not open. Is that different from your case?

Thanks for all the testing guys. It seems to me that maybe I changed
something in firefox that is having this bizarre effect. I have messed
with about:config with a few things (turning html5 on, cache
settings, ...). Also, maybe the firefox branch that i used (which is
a daily build branch) changed some settings that the other firefoxs
are picking up on and so a deeper cache clear may be needed.

@Brice, your hypothesis is interesting because my wireless mouse is
awfully finicky and sometimes double clicks on a single click. I'll
look into that.

Thanks again all. Glad that at best this looks like just a stubborn
corner case rather than more.

I'm using a wireless mouse too. A logitech, I didn't think to test a wired mouse.
