The only issue I've seen now is that the font used is all blurry. It
wasn't in 1.5, and I've just updated to 1.6a19 (no previous version of
1.6). I'm on Windows 7 using Firefox 4b3.

This is a Firefox 4.0b1-b3 bug, not something Firebug can fix or
workaround.
See http://getfirebug.com/knownissues

You can:
1) Open Firebug in an new window on FF 4.0b3, or
2) Install Firefox 3.6 and wait for FF 4.0b4, the earliest date for a
fix from Firefox.
