Firebug is freezing every application on my computer...

I'm using Firefox 23 with Firebug 1.23.0 under Windows 7. I'm trying to debug a JavaScript function that is called by the window.onresize event. I've set a breakpoint in the function.

When I resize the page the event calls the function and the function stops at the breakpoint. The mouse pointer is a two-headed arrow (the "resize window" icon). And that's all she wrote. No window on the system will respond to mouse clicks or keyboard input. The only escape is to press Ctrl+Alt+Del and cancel Firefox.

What is happening, and how can I fix it?

That's a known bug, which requires to be fixed in Firefox. I.e. resize event handlers can't be debugged at the moment.
