I then saw the following statement on gmail.com

The instructions seem a bit outdated. Can somebody give proper
instructions as to the correct way to fix things.

If you activated firebug for any of Google's sites, it'll open in
Gmail since it's URL is http://mail.google.com. But if you turn it off
once in Gmail, it won't open again.

Yeah, those instructions are really outdated. I left a message in that
page stating that the help is old and should be updated.

How do I turn it off in gmail. Do I disable the panels one by one or
is there a simpler way. I tried right-clicking on the bug icon on the
status bar. I tried clicking and seeing if there is a way to blacklist
mail.google.com (kinda like a filter) or any other way but didn't get
any further.

Well, first open firebug in gmail and then just hit the button with
the Off-like icon, the third one next to "minimize" and "detach".
