The Firebug Releases page (http://getfirebug.com/releases/index.html)
says:

> Recommended for Firefox 3 and Firefox 2. Firebug 1.2 focuses on performance improvements and support for Firefox 3. The 1.2 features are complete and we are actively fixing bugs. Please read the 1.2 release notes before installing.

But all links on getfirebug.com to install lead to
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/1843 which says FF2 is too
old to install it.

Is there some sort of file that needs to be fixed on the XPI? I run
both FF2 and FF3 for testing web development and would like firebug in
both.

Use Firebug 1.0.5 on FF2. FB 1.2 uses Firefox 3 APIs AFAIK

I used Mr. Tech's Tools to disable version compatibility and it runs
100% fine. No problems.

Read the Firebug Releases page again: "Firebug 1.2 Beta. Recommended
for Firefox 3 and Firefox 2."

But what I'm getting at is it doesn't install without hackery. And it
doesn't auto-upgrade (from b6 to b7 for example).

Seems like something about the XPI needs to be updated and fixed for
the mozilla addons site.

I've been running b6 and now b7 on 2.0.0.16 for several weeks now with
zero problems (other than getting it to install). This was asked
about in a previous topic <http://groups.google.com/group/firebug/
browse_thread/thread/dcd12e7d4f9e026e>, and the answers we got were
similarly ambiguous:

This from the SAME PERSON, (one of the lead developers of Firebug,)
two days apart. I can't figure out if this this is just a
miscommunication, or if they're reluctant to admit that it works with
FF2 because they haven't fully tested it, or what - so I filed an
official bug report <http://code.google.com/p/fbug/issues/detail?
id=1027>, which I hope will force the issue.

Sorry I was confusing. When I say "I've used Firebug 1.2 in FF2", I
mean "I used my development version in FF2"; when I say I can't get
the addons.mozilla.org version to install, its that version I am
talking about. It has some different install.rdf though I think that
is the only difference.

I've discussed differences in extension versioning on the mozilla
planning newsgroup. I'm in the "let the users try it and discuss what
works" camp, others prefer the "don't let the users have any version
you haven't tested" camp.

You can request changes to addons.mozilla.org on bugzilla.mozilla.org,
eg you could ask that their distributed version allow installation
into Firefox 2.0. One new change is that getfirebug.com is now hosted
by mozilla so you can register you request against the component
"getfirebug.com" and the right folks should see it. Or I'll ask them
myself later this week I should see them at the Firefox summit.

John.
