So I can verify that what I'm downloading and installing is actually what was originally published.

Well, because the Firebug add-ons are mainly developed by different people it depends on them to provide a checksum for their downloads.
Anyway, the simple check whether the downloaded file is the same as the published one is to check whether the extension appears in the Add-on Manager with the correct version number. It's not the same as comparing the checksum, but you can be quite sure that the add-on was downloaded correctly.
