Does it work if you install Firebug in a new fresh Firefox profile?
http://getfirebug.com/wiki/index.php/FAQ#Installing_in_a_clean_profile

Do you have any other (Firebug) extensions installed?

@Honza:
What he's talking about is the delayed load.

@Ben:
Firebug is now not loaded anymore with the browser start to avoid slowing it down. There's a new setting called extensions.firebug.delayLoad, which should bring back the old behavior when you set it to false. Though it doesn't work as expected yet.

Thanks guys that fixes it.

Stupid useless change to a default setting. I could understand the change if firebug eventually popped up, but it would never pop up at all unless trigged manually which defeats the object.

nb. i'm not one those nuts that firebug active for every site so this change fixed something that never affected me & probably 99% of clued up users.

There were many, many users complaining that Firebug is slowing down the browser start. So this change is definitely not useless.
And I need to say that I am one that prefers the old behavior and I also don't like to have On for All Web Pages enabled as you can read in issue 5623.
