firebug got everything firefox's web developers' tools got, except
snippet js syntax hightlight, so maybe some people would like to use
scratchpad.

when there is error in scratchpad, the build-in console pop-up.

it's kind of weired open firebug panel still pop the lame build
console.

Good catch, please create a new issue report so, it isn't forgotten.
I'll talk to the dev-tools team how to solve it.

for syntax hightlight in firebug you can use acebug
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/acebug/

btw since you used both firebug and devtools, which approach do you
think is better

to have everything in one place like in firebug
or to have several panels and windows?

I like firebug, but it tend to consume too much memory, so I have it disabled most of the time.
I need it, but only when I think the build-in web developer tools is too weak.

Yes, I know about that and I am working on memory leaks

I hope to have them fix in 1.9

For you information, I'm just an amateur who like to make some minor tweaks of web page or mantain a blog, for those writing HTML/js/CSS for living, the got no choice but firebug.

By the way, I like chrome's resource feature of its web developer tools, you can get access to not only .js .css .html resource, but also localstorage, cookies, quite handy

Firebug also allows to explore local/session/globalStorage, just go to
the DOM panel and find the appropriate field. You can expand it and
see the storage content.

For Cookies, you can install a Firecookie extension:
