Note that new Add-on Signing process (now mandatory) has been introduced [1] If you want to install Firebug.next XPI you need to manually disable it by setting the following pref to false.
xpinstall.signatures.required
We'll start distribute Firebug.next through AMO soon and it'll ensure automatic xpi signing.

If you are running Nightly, that's not an option. Mozilla stated the
choice would go away in FF42, and Nightly is at v42.

AFAIK the pref will continue to work on Nightly and Aurora; the mandatory signing is only for release channels (where it helps the most, and has less impact on extension developers).

And I sit corrected.
A previous Nightly update broke Firebug3, and it was disabled. I
could not find the preference in about:config that would let me
install it anyway.
Just looked again, and xpinstall.signatures.required was there, and
toggled to false allowed FB3 to install and operate.
